A friend of mine is considering selling his UKDM DC2 and I have been hankering after it for some time now.

It is black, unmolested, but has been kept in a barn for past few years and is not concourse by any means, but represents a restoration opportunity.

Is there anything in particular that I should be keeping an eye out for? Are they prone to rust, are there any parts that are difficult to source or replace?

The car had an engine rebuild by Honda about 6 or 7 years ago, and I think it has covered about 40k since then.

He has mentioned a slight gearbox crunch when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear, but I have not yet driven it to see how bad or regular this is. Has anyone heard of this being an issue?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Rusty rear arches / sills is the usual killer of these, especially UK models.

Have a good look around www.itr-dc2.co.uk (.com?) - that's the main UK resource for the cars.

You've hit the two main costs on the head though:-
- Rust, especially rear sills.
- 2nd to 3rd synchro.

I suspect a lot of ITRs out there now need TLC, but given the (comparatively) low value of these cars right now, I'd be viewing a 'barn car' with some serious concerns - cars age best when used regularly - so unless this car is an absolute bargain, I'd probably compare it with a couple of others in the market.

Also, how well do you know/trust this 'friend', and what will it do to the friendship if in 6 months time another major bill crops up???
