Dull question - apologies in advance.

I have a 4th gen CR-V that has done 45000 miles. At its third annual service a few months ago, the dealer noted that the gaiter on the NSF shock absorber was split. They quoted a price of £485 - I assume this was for a whole new shock absorber unit (or maybe they're just hammering me on labour charges).

Is it possible to buy the gaiter on its own?

I can see this for the 3rd gen CR-V. I wouldn't be surprised if the same part fitted the 4th gen car.

Lings Honda spares site list a dust cover for a NSF shock absorber under part number PFKL2314628 @ £54.10.

It`s here but for a 2009 CRV 2.2, they don`t list stuff for cars newer than 2010 for some reason...

Thanks. Looks about the same price as the other site I linked to. So my Honda dealer is either charging me £430 for labour to fit a shock absorber gaiter, or they are quoting a price for a complete shock absorber assembly.

The key question is whether that item you have linked to will fit the 2012-2016 cars. I suspect it will, but would like to confirm...

I'm guessing they've quoted for replacement of the entire shock assembly. Quite why they've taken this route is a mystery.

I'd be asking why they can't just replace the boot.

Weird coincidence I was told I needed a pair of these today as well. Was quoted £510 for a shock absorber which was weeping and two dust covers from main dealer over the phone.

Mine's a 58 plate.

Had exactly the same on our 2010 CRV. I've used these guys before for parts and they are excellent.

Interesting. I to have this comment after a services on our 2012 cr-v at 45,000 miles presently. Personally I feel this is a bit of a design flaw and have been debating with my self over what to do. The prices to replace are high due to the amount of work involved in just getting to the gaiter from what I understand. I am tempted to leave it as it seems like a part which will fail again in 4 years/45,000 miles and I don't see the suspension damper failing between now and then...?!?

Would be interested to hear what everyone has done.

Are these the parts? http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/2007-2012-crv-suspe...

I think the only risk is that the gaiter can disintegrate completely and jam the shock absorber. Have a look at the thread below.

http://hondakarma.com/guides/replacing-front-shock...

I went into Kwik Fit recently to get my aircon regassed, and asked about the shock absorber gaiter while I was in there. They had a look, said it was only a minor split, and that I shouldn't worry about it for the time being.

I'm leaving mine as it is, for the time being.

Like you, I think it is pretty poor that a part like this is wearing out after 45000 miles and is so expensive to replace at a dealer. My car has been well looked after and has not had a hard life.

Slightly OT, I had to replace the front driveshafts on my CRV at around 38,000 miles as they were worn and gave a nasty lateral vibration during acceleration.

It had not had a hard life and I was shocked at how the Honda tech guy diagnosed it so quickly. It was a common fault on the CRV but luckily Honda UK picked up 50% of the total cost. It still left me out of pocket to the tune of around £700 if I remember correctly....

Yesterday I had a good look around the gaiter (even took a video) to see where the damage to the gaiter was so I could monitor it over the summer. I was unable to find a split...

Spreadsheet Monkey, have you inspected yours and are they really split?

Good point. I've had a quick look without removing the wheels and couldn't see anything. Will take a proper look when I have the wheels off to get new tyres fitted in a couple of months time. I suspect the dealer was just being a bit over-zealous when reporting this as requiring repair.
