Mugen Civic Hatchback

Is Mugen testing the waters for a European Civic RR?

When the Mugen Civic RR came out in Japan only we couldn’t help thinking that they’d saved the best for themselves. But Mugen has hinted that we may get our own RR after weaving its magic on the five-door hatch Euro-spec version.

It has been unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show and although it is a bodykit only it gives an indication of what a Euro-Mugen would look like. The concept is being seen as a sign that Mugen is testing the waters for a Mugen here and is no doubt aware that the name is becoming more well-known on the Continent.

I want a Mugen RR [Jap spec] Civic so bad - it looked amazing on 5th Gear the other day and killed the S2000. What's the chances I'll be able to find one in about 3 years though [to replace the JDM Integra I've just bought] - might have to make do with a standard FD2!!!

Still looks like a bag of absolute sh*te. Face it, the new Civic is an eyesore and not even Mugen can sort it out.
The shape before this looked the best.

All in my opinion of course.

Looks like a car thats crashed into a Halfords and come out the other side dripping with Rip Speed tat...

But then its another one for the rice racer boys.

Bet it goes well, but wouldn't want to be seen driving in it, rather be seen in a scooby...

wait, no I wouldn't.

the spaceships got a wing, still looks like it would topple over when it goes round a corner too fast, it this a desparate attempt to bring it up to the old EP CTR's standard? Mugen RR s2000 wink

Really? at £30k? I can think of a lot of other cars i'd prefer to have for that money..

Each to his/her own I suppose.

I never did understand why Mugen do not produce cars for the UK market and Europe. Mugen come across like one of them spoilt little kid who do not want to share there toys. Sad really, they could make a killing.

Apples with oranges. Stock S2000 vs track-day biased modified hot-saloon - the Mugen RR (AIUI) runs on evens stiffer suspension than the stock FD2 and wears track-day rubber - RE01-R IIRC. The rubber alone would be worth over a second a lap even at Millbrook, so the 5th gear article was just ever-so-slightly misleading!!!

I really like the looks of new shape Civic Type-r but I hate the fact its heavier and slower than the old one, bit of a step backwards IMO.

If mugen can lighten the car (considerably), give it an LSD and bump the power up then I would love one.

Honda totally sold out with the new Type-R and its just a badge now in this country. I mean come on, dual zone climate control, sunroof and large heavy wheels...what is "Racing" about that?

IMO the Accord Type-R was the last true Type-R we (offically) had over here and that Mugen RR on 5th Gear the other night reminded me an awful lot of that car, especially the big spoiler, dual exhausts and the sound inside. I would live to see an on track comparison of those two!

Also, what happened to that S2000 Type-r with a fixed hardtop Honda were supose to be bringing out?

"Diffucult is worth doing"...well f * cking do it then and build what the people want!

I Agree, I would take the S2000 any-day of the week over Civic, RWD for a start.

If we must put up with the watered down Euro models then this is welcomed.

I guess the reason we get Brit built tosh is to avoid the import limitations from Japan. Isn't it time this was lifted? I like the Euro type R but I like the JDM performance. What's stopping them selling JDM chassis with Euro body?

Oh, and if I hear another bloody 'driven through ripspeed' comment or the infernal 'mapped' comment again I'll go loopy!

Completely disagree, I think the old car looked plain - the new Civic really is a bold design. It's just a shame it lost some of the driving edge the old CTR had.

I really don't understand what Mugen are thinking with this though - huge spoiler that doesn't suit it at all and a 5 door version only?? smash

For those with a PS3 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, there's a Best Motoring (Japanese Top Gear that's actually factual and far better for car enthusiasts) video where they compare the JDM Civic Type RR with a 'standard' Type R, an aerodynamically modified (with standard engine and such) Type R which I think was called the Modulo, then an S2000 and S2000 type Zero, which only differs to the standard S2000 in it's aerodynamic modifications.

The point, obviously, was to test if huge spoilers and such actually helped around a track. After 5 laps of Tsukuba, the order was the Modulo in first, then the RR, then the CTR, the S2000 type Zero and the S2000 came last. Made for interesting viewing, given the layout of the track with its flat-out corner which comes just before a fairly long straight section you would have thought the S2000's would have at least beaten the CTR, but apparently not.

Personally I love the JDM Type RR, for me it looks like Mugen have resurrected the Integra in a slightly fatter body. The Euro one, however, is too fat and as has been said, not even Mugen can save it, least of all with their huge Impreza STi wing!
