My 98 UK DC2 integra sometimes gets stuck in reverse. Its seems to be fairly random, has happened when cold, after a long run etc.

I had a look on the ITR DC2 forums but the only search result I found, suggested it was the clutch. I haven't had any other problems so I don't see how it can be the clutch.

Anyone get any suggestions to cause or fix?

Linkage? Possible that the linkage is worn or loose...what's the mileage?

I'm also trying to remember whether the DC2 has synchro on reverse?

Or clutch! Does it feel 'sticky/heavy/baulky' or does it feel mechanically blocked? And does it happen more when the car is warm or cold?

I'd check the linkage first, then I'd do a clutch test (5th @ 30, floor the throttle, see if the rev-rise matches the speed-rise or if revs rise without speed changing).

probably the clutch. when it went on my DC2 it was very hard to get it into certain gears.

Mileage is 90,000. I suppose it feels mechanically blocked, just doesnt want to budge at all at first, takes a little gentle persuasion to get it out.

It seems to happen randomly not just when cold.

How do I check the linkage?

I don't have any other problems that would make me think it was the clutch. No problems getting into gears (apart from reverse sometimes but I've read that this is a common problem), just getting out of reverse.

Clutch is most likely, especially if it is still on it's first one.

The springs tend to break making hard/impossible to get into some/all gears depending on random luck.

PS Actually it could be the 5th gear synchro on the way out which you have to get past to get in and out of reverse.

Thanks, I'll take a look at my service history then see about getting it checked over.

If it is the clutch what should I replace it with?

OE is good.

Exedy (organic, i.e. lowest spec) also has a very good rep, or at least did a few years back.

Check itr-dc2.com for more advice and more recent recommendations.

PS - make sure you change the release bearing at the same time, it may be OK now but they can get damaged when changing the clutch...

PPS - if you're into modding the car, consider a lighter flywheel at the same time...

It sounds like a problem with the 5th/reverse gear syncro to me.

I had the same problem with my prelude.

How smooth is your gearchange into 5th, any nochyness ? (

Be careful not to make any bad changes into 5th, as eventually you will kill the sysncro. The most common cause of this problem is accidentaly changing into 5th when you were going for 3rd.

Sounds like clutch to me. Just had mine done at 70k miles and it's transformed the car!

have a search on DC2 as there's an entire section on clutches and after a lot of reading I decided to stick to the original parts. Prices also vary quite a bit so have a good shop around.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have been particularly attentive recently and would you believe it, I've had no trouble at all and that included the coldest drive I've done so far (need to get gloves or a mini tea cosy for the gear stick though).

There doesn't seem to be any issue with 5th gear either.

Looking through the service history I can't see the last time the clutch was done, so think I might buy my car a Christmas present.

As the car is completely stock at the moment I'd probably go down the OEM route (to avoid ending up on an expensive, modifying, slippery slope!)

Where is the best place to get a clutch? Roughly how much should the parts and labour cost?

Can't remember the sites off the top of my head but have a look in the retailers section of the DC2 forum as there's a couple of places which stock standard parts. Just be aware the yen is totally stuffing up some parts places so prices aren't as competitive as they were a few months back.

Got mine done for £300 all in but that's through a mate of a mate who once knew a mate at Honda etc! Think unfortunately you won't get much change out of £500 at a garage but obviously if you're handy with the spanners you may be able to do it yourself.
