Why do I want an EP3 Type R!?
Discussion
I've had my ep3 for over 2 years now and absoluteley love it.
It handles good , is quick, very practical and looks ace.
Last year i travelled two hundred miles in it to knockhill, smashed the living daylights out of it on a track day, popped into my mums on the way home for tea left my mums, drove to carlisle, put the rear seats down, picked up a tumble dryer that i won on ebay and put it in the back, all while managing 30'ish mpg all the way home in comfort, and was back in my house in blackpool in time for eastenders.
How much better an all rounder can you get?
I do agree though that with a few mods they can be made even better.

You could always buy an Accord Type R for £3000, invest the other £5000 in stocks and enjoy cheaper insurance (and a standard fit torsen LSD).
After having a Focus RS, you'll miss not having a trick diff and you might be disappointed with a standard model CTR.
I've driven both ATR and EP3. I know which one i'd choose for the money. That said, everyone is different.
I've found ATR mpg is 24-27, whereas the EP3 is 28-31. The extra 100kgs and 160cc of the Accord would be the reason for that.

Ive had mine for 4 years and I thrash the nads off it whenever I can. Ive never had to put a spanner on it......Bulletproof is an understatement.
My wife drives it day to day, it houses our two year old in the back fine and the buggy in the boot.
If we got rid of it for any reason, we would have another further down the line no doubt at all.
Get one.

When/If the RS sells I will get one lol
Coming from a Focus owner that had to pull out of the the Kent run ginger wizard was on (thermostat housing leak) i think you will regret it, mine is very good on fuel when not sticking my foot down (approx 320 bhp) also i have done over 50k in 5 years with only wear & tear issues & 1 recovery truck experiance due to driver error!!! Personally imho i never warmed to the type 'r' & to compare it to the Rs is not right. Performance wise its at the same level as the St170 or cooper 's' (also use the same gearbox as both cars)& i have driven a few iroincally the performance between 2 i drove back to back was huge for 2 stock cars!!

ST170 - you're having a laugh? ST170 is 170bhp and 1208 kgs giving 143 bhp/tonne - compared to Civic 197 bhp and 1203 kgs giving 167 bhp/tonne Cooper S - again you're having a laugh. 161 bhp and 1140 kgs giving 143 bhp/tonne.
The only Mini that would trouble a Civic is an S Works Cooper.
Oh and the stats on the Mk1 RS? 212 bhp and 1278 kgs giving 168 bhp/tonne. Or precisely 1bhp/tonne more than the Civic.

Your source on this bit of information? The Civic does not share the gearbox with anythingAnd just for giggles I see 5 EP3's in the fastest UK FWD cars, with Guy Chamberlain running 9.9 seconds. Where are all the Focus RS, or are they not as good as the Civic's ?

You'll be surprised a EP3 type R will struggle to shake off a MCS. Im no way saying the MCS is faster, as its not. But show a twisty road and even a straight upto 80-90 and the MCS will be sat right on its tell.
Also a MCS feels much faster to drive.
A Mini Cooper S John cooper Works IS faster, and better on the bends. I know because we had one. Also a MCS feels much faster to drive.
BUT the mini is flawed in a few areas, mostly if its not got a LSD its crap in anything other than a totally dry day and wouldnt leave a Civic 1.4 let alone type R, and secondly its brakes are rubbish (unless you opted for the JCW upgrade brakes).
As for a normal Mini Cooper S, No where near a type R.

But i beg to differ, on a twisty b road with two similar drivers the Type R will struggle to leave the Mini behind.

ST170 has a very similar power curve to a Civic Type-R; provided you don't use the second cam...
So, performance wise, an ST170 is at the same level as a broken CTR with no VTEC engagement.
Brilliant and so true. So, performance wise, an ST170 is at the same level as a broken CTR with no VTEC engagement.

Really, i thought the Focus RS was pretty good at staying on a track stux2004 said:
A mk1 Focus RS would do a standing quarter mile considerably quicker than an EP3. Also, the Focus has about 80lbs/ft more peak torque than a K20.

Top Gear lapsThe Focus RS is more comparable to a Clio V6 255 than a bog standard EP3 with no LSD.
Focus RS Mk1 1:32.2
EP3 Facelift 1:32.8
Mini Cooper S Works 1:34.2
Add in a Quaife LSD to the EP3 and it will be faster still

As for 1/4 miles
Focus RS Mk1 14.67 96.95
EP3 Facelift 14.76 95.93
