I've lived in Switzerland, Australia and the usa. Based on that, I'd tend to agree.

We live in Zurich. I have never been to Geneva so couldn't comment unfortunately. I am married with kids, and Zurich is certainly great for families, and seems to have a reasonable night scene, however it is several notches down from London. Other considerations:
- very expensive.
- people are nice, but love their rules
- central to everywhere
- tonight is going to be minus 10 c
- driving is a pain with all the speed cameras, but public transport is brilliant.
I like it, perhaps do a trip and see for yourself.

Cheers

To counter a few of your points:
Yes Zurich is very expensive, but the salaries and low taxes balance that out. Checkout staff earn getting on for £40k a year and the tax rates mean net pay is equivalent to more like 50k.
The rules are can be a bh, but if you accept that the reason the country works because generally people stick to the rules then...
What's wrong with -10?
Are the cameras really such an issue? I've only been zapped once in 3 years and I really don't drive slowly.

Thanks for your counter. I didn't say it was bad, I was just pointing out some impressions I have for someone who asked.

After living in both Geneva and (canton) Zurich they're both great and frustrating, but for very different reasons.

The transport in Geneva isn't brilliant to be honest, well not if you are used to Zurich. It's punctual in GVA but if the journey is from one side of the Rhone to the other it will take a lot of time. We used to live in Collonges-Bellerive next to the lake on the south-side and getting from home to the railway station or the airport would take ages. It was less than 7km to the railway station.

The Genevois are a lot less likely to be following rules all the time. It's a much more French culture with positives and negatives that this brings.

For a single person living close to the centre would be my choice but it all depends on where you're going to work. See note on public transport above. Other issue could be parking as few of the older buildings have garages. Go a bit further outside what is a tiny city to areas like Champel and it's going to be easier.

Those lists are BS. They are made from a perspective of a manager in an international company with kids. For one, it's next to impossible to find an apartment in Geneva. It's not all that safe in Switzerland, even in small towns. There are a lot of small inconviniences.

Take Moscow. It's an awfull city by all objective measures... Yet if you are young, single and with a decent salary it could be paradise.

The main problem, is that in the end you'll always be a foreigner living in Switzerland. You'll never integrate and spend most of your time with other ex-pats. It's that type of country.
