Skiing near Zurich

Hi all. Not a very used section of PH, but I'm flying to Zurich in January and fancy a ski trip. Is there any resorts close to Zurich? I'd love to get the train to a resort as I've always fancied arriving in a ski resort on the train!

Anyone any recommendations?

Flumserberg is a ski resort, it's +- 90 minutes by train from the airport.

I ski in Flumserberg regularly. Its a nice, small resort but plenty slopes for a day or two skiing and high enough for good snow. If you're going for a week it's probably a bit small, then I would recommend Flims / Laax. It's about 20 minutes further away but bigger and also accessible by train.

Thank you for the replies. I've been looking at Flumserberg but I can't seem to see the train details/route on the website. Can you tell me which site I could look at the route/timetable/prices? Also, Carmo have you any recommendations for accommodation?

No problem. Use the website www.sbb.ch its in English also. Use Zurich mainstation (or Zurich) and Flumserberg tannenbodenalp or Kabinenbahn. Its about 1hour 45minutes with one change.

Accommodation I can't help you as I have never stayed but there are many hotels, apartments, etc in the resort.

Also check out Andermatt - around 2hours from Zurich main station.

If you're going to stay in Zurich and take day trips out to the resorts check the www.sbb.ch website for Snow and Rail tickets - basically a train and lift pass combination. Often works out much cheaper that buying the two separately and I think you also get a 10% off voucher for rental gear in the resort.

At weekends the S2 train goes all the way to Unterterzen, then you just get off the train, cross the road and take the gondola up to the resort. Trains are half hourly at XX.18 and XX.48 from platform 32 at Zürich HB and you can buy a 'Rail & Ski' ticket at the station which covers your lift pass as well as train ticket.

One thing to be aware of though, Flumseberg is really quiet in the week and PACKED at weekends - nobody goes there for a skiing holiday, it's pretty much 100% people from Zürich and the surrounding area going there for a day trip.

For me, it's one of the quieter (but still busy) resorts. Flims for example has huge queues everywhere at the weekend. Then again every resort is busy on a sunny winter weekend day.

True. I guess what I'm saying is more than Flumseberg is really quiet during the week (more so than other places) but is busy at weekends. I had a great day there at the end of the season, amazing sunshine (16 degrees at Wallensee) and totally deserted the whole morning. On one of the blue runs there was nobody else there other than the two of us!
