Italian speeding fines

Has anybody with Swiss plates actually received a fine if they have been speeding on the Italian autostrade? A friend in my car might have wandered over the limit recently, in the sections where they have average speed systems with automatic plate recognition.

Seems to me that the system would not automatically recognise Swiss plates so it would have to be handled manually, and then the Italians would have to contact Switzerland. Does this actually happen, anybody know?

Annoyed with of course, but with some crazy traffic, people tailgating, etc, they just wanted to stay clear of lunatics with mobile phone cameras hanging out of windows.

Hi Andrew

As far as I know it is in your interest to pay eventual fines as they occur in Italy,(you might have difficulties re-entering the country later), BUT sometimes the Italian try to get their money
via intermediate companies(http://www.parktrade.com/main/default.aspx) based for example in Switzerland. This intermediary is ILLEGAL, the Swiss Justice Dept. issued a note to
the Italian Govt. and lots of Northern Italian City Polices. you need legal contracts between STATES and not private companies and local police depts.

See here. unfortunately it is in German:

I'd have thought that in your car(s) in Italy, you'd be encouraged to speed without consequence wink
Good luck...

Many thanks Rainer. We will have to visit your lovely part of the world before the end of the so-called summer. I hear you have some great driving roads!

Hi Chaps

I am open to any date, if it is on a SAT or SUN, but let me check first with Dot.
Will check some roads, too.
From Zug/ZH it is roughly a 100 miles on fast (relatively, we are in CH) and A, to Schruns, very near the Silvretta,
BUT in Austria you'll need a sticker to be paid (a day, week or sim., or up to one year)

Enjoy your week-end.

Rainer
