I was in the Black R26.R at Bedford on saturday. It was my first track day in the R26.R and my first time at Bedford. To be honest i found the long queues getting onto track prevented me from doing that many sessions but when i finally managed to get out on track i enjoyed myself - i even found the rain semi-enjoyable especially with zero traction from my brand new semi-slick R888's!! Found peoples track etiquette very good and met some nice friendly people. I seem to be remember changing my tyre pressures in one of the garages when it was bucketing down with rain and the chap with the MX5 that uploaded the youtube video came in alongside me - i couldn't believe you were still going out in the driving rain and wearing no gloves - hard core, LOL!! You certainly had some fun going side ways pretty much every time i saw you on track!! Anyway, won't rush back to Bedford but it was a good taster for the season to come. Want to do Snetterton 300 next.

interesting i found some of the track etiquette wanting, some people clearly not letting off on the straights, despite catching them 2 corners before! whether it is tunnel vision, inexperience or just "i'm not letting you past mate" i dunno...are you listing mr 300ZX and mr silver 964 wink probably the exception in reality though just annoying when you make plenty of effort to move over for others...

in terms of queues everytime i've been to bedford (4 now) its been the same, another issue is that if its queueing people stay out longer and just do a couple of cool down laps rather than coming in, which makes the problem worst! though it was better on saturday than i've previously seen it, the one thing that p1sses my off is the people who park down the front then just expect to join the queue at the front rather than joining at the back.. the RPM teknic cars were doing this alot frown

the rain was good fun i thought, amazing its the first time i'd been on track in the proper wet, i was really pleased with the 911, loadsa manageable understeer to warn you to slow it abit... LOL i let the PSM take care of the oversteer(which it does very well it seems), just wish my car had sport chrono to a bit of slip angle, make me look more hero like wink

The queues didn't seem that bad to me, although when i was out in the MX5 I did have to wait at the front in the pouring rain for about 5mins - I was wondering if the marshall was doing it on purpose and enjoying watching me and my passenger getting soaked!

I did have waterproofs on, my mate just had a jacket, so his jeans where pretty wet!

hands got cold eventually, so I did the next session in my integra with the heater on :-)

Best plan is to get out of sync with everyone and in most cases can get straight out on the track.

always nice to play in the rain as it really saves wear on everything... and the fuel consumption is better too :-)

Dissapointed the track photographer didn't do any pics in the rain... I was trying my best to provide some dukes of hazzard style photo opportunities!

BTW, I'd love a passenger ride in your R26.R... I've always wanted to see what they are like compared to my integra as it's a similar approach making a road car a bit more track biased.

The Snetterton 300 circuit is awesome - I did a 12hr endurance race there in novemeber and driving it at night is just out of this world - I wish they did night-time trackdays!

Maybe i was just being too polite!! Yes there were a few that took a little longer to put there right indicators on than others but overall it was ok. And i hear what you are saying about the guys jumping into the queue at the front - it did really start to annoy me but again what do you do?? Roll on Snetterton on April 1st - just hope there are not too many "fools" out!!!

Report back on my deal of the century Nokian tyres which im sorry to say were seriously lacking in feedback on the road and felt sloppy on the dry morning track - BUT they really came alive in the wet. What a bargain at £80 for a rear (normally £250+ each) or £300+ for Pirellis.
Did you put a few heat cycles through them before using them on track?

Hey,

Nice vid. And cool edit. Shame about the sports mode.

By any chance do you have some other footage including my car (black R8)?

On another note, I'm thinking of splashing out on some equipment to video. I have a mini lip video hd camera in the office which i can put on a clamp for just video or use an iPhone to marry up with Harry's Laptimer App which does similar to what you showed on your vid. But I thi it could be a bit of a faff and not work properly.

Your vid looked very solid and professional. Can you tell me what your set up is.

Ps. I prefer the view out of the windscreen out of the three you showed. Since you have the data overplayed, you don't need to see the car inside. My two pennies anyway.

Not using Sports mode was a pain but it registered 126dB in the static test frown

Unfortunately no footage of your car.

I used my iPhone with the 'Action Cam' app for my first video. The iPhone was connected to the screen using a suction cup. The only problem was the data was not that reliable and you can only record for 10 mins at a time. I was a passenger so was able to ensure the videos were managed OK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9HJEdGfbzI

The video taken on the 18th Feb was taken using a Contour+. This has a GPS receiver built into it that runs a 4Hz (it takes a reading 4 times a second). The camera was mounted on a suction cup and set up using the free iPhone app. There is also the Contour GPS that will record GPS data at 2Hz. People also use the GoPro cameras but I like the fact that you get the GPS data and you can also rotate the lens on the Contours, which you cannot on the GoPro.

I used Dashware software that allows you to import the video and GPS data. You then choose your dials and then export the video. I then used Camtasia to put the video together but you could virtually any video editing software. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTJt9uBwrGY

Thanks. Can you tell me more about the Contour+

How do you get an iPhone app onto it?

The app Harry's laptimer does ever other lap. It looks good. The issue I had is fixing it in the car. The rules say the camera must be fixed and not a suction cup. I got black flagged Saturday for a passenger hand holding a camera. If suction cup is allowed that solves everything. I have an old TomTom one with is so strong the plastic would break before the suction does!

Contour web site is here: http://contour.com/

I attached the Contour+ to the window of the car using a suction cup. You can also get other mounts including low profile helmet mounts. The camera is pretty small without a screen, this is where the app comes in.

There is an app called Contour for the iPhone. You then use bluetooth between the Contour+ and iPhone to see what the camera is looking at and adjust the camera position accordingly. You can also make adjustments to the camera, such a video mode and light conditions. Once everything is set up you turn off the bluetooth and when you are ready to record slide the large record button to On.

I have not had any problems with the suction cup at Bedford. It was put on the back window, front window and side window and the marshals seemed happy.
