Super newbie query! (MSVT Drift Day)
Discussion
Hi guys,
I've just got myself an mx5 with an lsd, coilies etc. For my birthday the parents are planning to book me an MSVT drift day on the oulton park drift track.
I have a few real newbie questions that i couldn't find definitive answers on:
1 - I presume a helmet is needed, with it not being a high speed track day i wasn't too sure if i will need one.
2 - Is there a noise limit on the drift track, i believe its 105db running an 95db drive past for regular events so does this apply to the drift days?
3 - Any one had a go? What were your thoughts?
Any help appreciated on this.
Alex

yes would need a helmet (I just use a cheap motorbike one, think they hire them for £10ish)
yes noise limits would apply
not done this, but have done http://www.driftlimits.co.uk/
the above is good fun and you use their cars, so works out fair value when you consider the wear and tear avoided to your won car.

Very good day, did one last month. Low friction surface is very slippy. I did it in my mx5, was sunny so had roof down. They required a full face but hired it from them for £10. I didn't see anyone get sound tested on the day. Some were pretty loud. Have fun, can't wait to book another one!

I've done four, all at Oulton Park, I'm there again on the tenth of October (say hello if you are there- red rx8).
Very easy to slide in, low friction tarmac so no load or whatever wear on the car at all, just avoid the divets just off the track if you can.

I did one in my Z4MC, and they obviously weren't keeping it damp/slippy enough as I had to go home at lunchtime due to using up the 4mm of tread I had on the rears. Bloody expensive morning that turned out to be.Very easy to slide in, low friction tarmac so no load or whatever wear on the car at all, just avoid the divets just off the track if you can.

I also found out it's silly to have your windows open - as you'll just end up with mud all over your interior
Bloody good fun though
I went last year - brilliant fun and a great way of learning car control in a controlled environment

If you are buying a helmet, get one that fits well and comes up to current Snell standards. It's your head, FFS. It worth more to you intact than the entire car.
If you have an open top car, some circuits will insist on full face. But open face is more comfortable and cooler. Remember, if you do go for open face and they get awkward, you an always hire a full face one for a tenner. I went roof off/ open face at my last TD, no issues. In my experience it's one of those silly things - ask and they insist, don't ask and they don't.

Or, as a guide, choose one based on how good you would like it to be should you actually have an off and need it to work properly……………..
Or as a guide, the helmet is BMS stickered so I think it'll be ok... I took adive from the chap in the shop, wanted one suitable and stickered, it just isn't a fancy helmet. I could have bought the same one with more vents, different chin strap etc. and it would have been double the price. Will the double the price perform better? Thanks for the passive aggressive response though! It's also the exact same helmet hired out to me on the previous track day by the circuit, so read into that what you will...
Hi Dotty, I agree that price is not the only indicator of effectiveness but it is an indicator and I wouldn't be keen on a £45 lid. I think the fact that circuits use the same type speaks more about the price than the quality.
Everyone's free to make a choice though and that's how it should be

I must admit, if I was doing a drift day 4mm I would think was normal for a morning. Any less would fall into the..... Not trying hard enough bucket.Gassing Station | Track Days | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
