Well done. They are great fun cars. I love mine. Yes you could spend a bit more and buy a track ready car. But personally I have very much enjoyed improving mine one step at a time. Spreads the cost and increases the satisfaction!
There are a few good E36 build threads on here if you are looking for ideas. I have been writing mine for years. Good to see you starting yours at the start. Keep us updated.
Thank you. I really enjoyed building the Golf. I know there is lots I can do to it. I'll search out your build thread and have a read. First thing is to repair the damage and get it MOTed.

Yes, I found writing a build thread very helpful actually. You get some great advise and it's better than any pile of receipts for looking back at and seeing what you got from were etc.

Threads like this should have warnings attached to them!

There I was, happily scanning through the various threads, when I stumble upon hearing how cheap Compacts are and how they can equal relatively cheap track day fun.

A few hours later and I need to find somewhere to hide the silver e46 318ti I just bought, as a base for a track car!

I think you already had enough BMW goodness going on for a thread to convince you that you needed another Mark.

I need to do a bit of an update but I actually just enjoyed looking through it again.

As you will see in some of the pictures my mate has a MK kit car which he built (he's running a Hayabusa engine in it now!) On the track it's quicker than mine, his consumables are a lot less money, but he doesn't have a roof when it rains or a heater when it's cold. His is worth more than he has spent on it, mine is certainly worth less but I wouldn't swap.

Just a word about bhp, you won't get 250 out of a 2.8 unless you visit someone with a generous dyno

What do you think is likely from a 2.8 with cams, 6 branch, light flywheel & Jenvey ITB kit running standalone?

I'd be surprised if you passed 235 but I'm happy to be wrong. With the 2.8 in as standard it's not slow and if the engine is good to start with I would suggest you leave the engine and go with upgrading the brakes, tyres and suspension.

Don't forget it will be running an open diff too

Do you plan on modifying the loom to run the battery in the front or are you relocating the battery?

Agree, 235 is about it without major surgery.

225 out of mine with proper exhaust manifold, cold inlet, m50 inlet, remap, bbtb, and external fuel regulation.

You really must get a lsd on one though, the difference is fantastic.

My old car made 219 with just an M50 inlet & End Tuning ECU map.

I only ask, as my E21 project has an M52 with the Jenvey etc.

The engine I am picking up tonight, alledgely runs 244 with cams, exhaust, inlet, BBTB, etc, etc.

If I can get somewhere near I'll be happy!!

I got 229, stock exhaust, just the m50 & the map, is a conservative dyno, have had pair of my e36 m3s on one 265, other 275, & 2x stock 328s at 210.

What was interesting tho was dyno plot of just the m50 & then plus the map, peak bhp wasn't much 8bhp, but the list torque curve was magically back, like a standard car.

Enjoy the engine, Matt. I'll miss it- it was brilliant.

For those spouting abject bullst about them not making more than 235bhp without 'surgery', please direct yourselves to BW Chiptune's doors- they ran T-1000, which was the 328 that ran 263bhp after a lot of tweaking. My best friend's 328 is there at the moment, and ran 230bhp before any mapping whatsoever with Schrick cams, M50, and all the other usual mods.

Mine ran 245bhp and 228lb/ft (Matt's new engine) with Riot Racing cams, a solid/lightweight flywheel, big bore throttle body, M50 intake manifold, M3 Evo exhaust manifolds, a full M3 Evo exhaust system, no viscous fan, and a DaveF induction kit. No mapping. This was on the same dyno that plotted 208bhp and 215bhp respectively for 2 328s running just M50 manifolds, and it previously ran 233bhp with just DaveF, M50 intake manifold, solid/lightweight fly and a decat exhaust system on JKM's usually pessimistic rollers. It's a very strong engine, I can only hope that my new 3-litre that I've built will be able to hold a candle to it.

So you don't think changing cams & flywheels is surgery then?

Another good read!! Could I ask what gearbox, driveshaft, diff and half shafts you are using?
