Not sure if your car would suffer oil surge with the more grippy tyres, worth keeping in mind.
Got that covered. Fitted baffled sump and a SPA digital pressure/temp oil gauge that flashes like mad when pressure drops!

I see that you have your sensible head on.

Probably a good idea to buy a pair of Federal rears now to match my unused Federal fronts that I have.
Use these for the rest of the year and then put on a stickier set for next year.

As you've already got a pair of Federals that you can fit on the front then why not buy some rears to match? You'll only end up never using the front if you don't.

What size are your Federal fronts Peter? If you want a fresh start, I need a set of Federals.....

BTW, as a man who has more than one set of wheels and an interest in sprinting, have you considered going for two separate sets of tyres, a set of medium compound for track days and a set of much softer compound tyres for sprinting? IMH,APQW,O, sprinting needs a tyre that works 10/10ths straight from cold, whereas on a track day you can run a few laps at 6-8/10 to get the tyres and brakes warmed up.
Good point, so what is the 10/10ths?
I don't know for sure, but:

They seem to be discussing an Avon slick

Don't forget that Toyo R888's are now gradually being superseded by R888R's

Supposed to be better.

Just a thought!

Agree, 888's have been around for a while now and we'll over due a replacement.

Am also led to believe there are two types of Federal tyres, cheap ones on eBay wink and a motorsport one - different compound and lighter.

Bromers could have a point about two types of the apparently same Federals.
There is a supplier on PH Classifieds who sells them.
Had a chat with him about them, he was not at all happy about what he saw as a different tyre with the same name being sold through EBay, undercutting him by 30-40%.

Just to add another to the mix have you thought of the Kumho V70's.

I use them and the grip levels are massive.

You could try these, I use them on the cerb.
Hi Graham, is that the secret weapon ?

What are they?
Federal 201s. Take about 5 laps to warm up, but then are superb.....
So no use for sprints
Ah!
Are they road legal?

They probably won't be with the various new rules.

I use these on my E36 M3, they are fantastic.
They are apparently road legal but mine certainly aren't anymore. I'm considering another set next.
Prices are up and down all the time so best to watch the market.

I've got Federals on my 944 Turbo and while they seem to be lasting well and very grippy when warm they are not so good when it's cold and damp and are downright scary in heavy rain and standing water.

The Nankang NS2Rs in the 120 soft compound are supposed to be better but now that the price of AD08Rs has come down over the AD08s is have thought that they would be the best compromise if not going for 888s. That said, if you were looking at 888s then A048s aren't that much more. (Budget creep)

Was the revelation dry grip, wet grip, or immediate grip, Martin?
I need more tyres for next season.....

Had a brief look.

Camskills were slightly more expensive than Triple 8s!

Dry grip, need about half a lap to warm up and then never seem to over heat, wet grip is as acceptable as any of this sort of tyre.

One set typically lasts me a year so 8 to 10 trackdays and 7000 road miles but I did have to modify the cambers to get this level of longevity, rears were always good but had to go to 3.5 deg on the front to get decent life.

Very stiff side walls so not a comfortable tyre but the feed back from them is brilliant, my car sends me a telegram before it steps out it is so predictable and easy to correct.

Last time at brands I was doing 56 second laps on these tyres and not so much as a twitch.

Honestly, I think out of the 888's, RSR and the NS2R, your not going to see a massive amount of difference. If you were competing then yeh, you want to look to get every tenth possible out of a tyre, so an extra £100 a corner might be worth it. Just for track days is it really worth it? I don't think so. Had the RSR (rear) and the NS2R (front) on the 430 before I sold the wheels off and seemed to handle just peachy.
