what are the mk2 version mx5 like compared to the mk1 as a trackday tool~?
i'm thinking the 140bhp 1,8 version, are they as rusty as mk1s can be, are they as reliable etc?

Rust: Check out the front chassis rails threads. Bits to weld in can be purchased now so it's not as expensive as fixes when the problem was first discovered.

Do they drive as well as the mk1 on track? Seen one advertised with coil overs and a proper roll hoop thats local. Might go look at weekend. Mk2s seem to go for peanuts tbh

They are pretty similar underneath mk2 have slightly better geometry and some do come with better spec ie torsen diff etc but not much between them. Again the engines are very similar and you be hard pressed to notice the 10bhp difference and are bit more expensive to turbo over the mk1.

Go along to a track day and see if there are any mx5 there see if you can blag I ride out and see what suits you better.

Some of my best value fun trackdays were in the old mx5. What a hoot! Just a bit frustrating getting re-passed on long straights etc. Did manage a backwards through craner curves at 90mph once on cold tyres oops!
Might be viewing a mk2 on sunday all being well

Fd rx7, easy 3-400bhp 1100kg 50/50 weight distribution, huge aftermarket potential and great forums for rotary assistance.

Might struggle to get anything decent for 5k though.

RX8 could be done easily thing. Mine is just being built. Having spent a few years playing with a rotary engine kit car I wanted something I could play with on the road and on track. I've bought an rx8, am having a fresh stage 2 build on it and will put some springs and arbs on it and will be very close to the 5k budget with a 3 year, 30000 miles warranty including track and race. Good cars, great to drive and very nicely balanced in the corners.

Ive got a MK3 MR2 with the 2zz engine - 190hp.

Has cost me about £3k as it stands.

Had an n/a mx5 before this, I prefer the mr2 by a long way.

Try and blag a ride out with some people on here to choose your favourite!

Obvious choice.. but works well.

e36 325(in this case)
Ecu upgrade
cage
Gaz coilovers
stripped
Bushes done
Fz201 tyres + another set of normal road tyres (wets).
Strut brace
seats
steering wheel
Poly windows
Fiberglass bonnet
Silly green paint
m3 front bumper
full exhaust.
+ lots of other little things.

Under 5K all in and fully road legal too.. £280 a years on limited miles all mods declared. And the colour change has been send to the DVLA.

Also done, just need some better seats.
