Best car for making a touring car style track car?

It would be a cool idea to make a touring car-style track car, and was wondering what car would be best for doing this?
Volvo 850 T5BMW E36
Alfa 155
Ford Mondeo MK1/2
Nissan Primea GT
All the rest were a bit rubbish, and I'm a Peugeot fan but I doubt a 405/406 would make a good track car.
the days of supertouring are certainly a good place to start, the base cars used will be peanuts now. Ideally would need to be RWD with a decent engine to start off with, although if you want to keep it strictly to formula a high revving 2 litre engine would be good.
From the current season best choice would probably be a BMW 1 series, although can probably pick up a focus ST170 for cheap, maybe a seat Leon or something.

I never really considered the 1 series, but that is a fantastic idea! From the current season best choice would probably be a BMW 1 series, although can probably pick up a focus ST170 for cheap, maybe a seat Leon or something.
