I had nabbed a PAX ride in the SLS at about 10am, first lap was great, and then that rain shower hit, and we watched cars spin off in front of us. I was quite relieved when the lap was red flagged, as I didn't have the same confidence in the traction control that the driver had. Lovely car, and it was very generous of the driver to give me a ride.

Best thing yesterday for me as being one of the first cars on track just after 8am, and having a dry clear track with just me and my mate in close formation. Great fun for my parents as well who were passengers in each car.

Good point, worth considering.

I actually do t know how I will find returning to track days, the car (on track) and the whole 'Ring experience. It may be - because it's certainly on my bucket list - something I do once, or it could be something I want to repeat and, either way it's probably worth having some video to review.
Good to meet you, glad you had fun, will be looking out for you when Jochen's galleries are open.

Likewise! Always nice to see a TVR being used as Peter Wheeler intended. thumbup

Huge thanks to all those who kindly gave pax laps on Thursday which, I have no doubt, helped to ensure that I DID NOT CRASH when I finally got out onto the circuit on Friday. Sorry if I held anyone up though!

Particular thanks to Nigel for help, encouragement and, most of all, for giving me the indelible memory of my first ever lap around the 'Ring in the astonishingly quick Pinderwagen.

As I said at the time, it was an absolute pleasure !!thumbup

I`m interested to see what you decide when you calm down and reflect on the event. Do you tick it off your bucket list and move on or has the bug bitten and you`re already looking forward to DN17.. laugh

It was a tremendous experience. Driving was actually far, far more enjoyable as a novice than I'd feared. Initial reaction and plan was to consider the box ticked, but I'm going to let thoughts percolate over the winter. I think the potential for 'non fault' damage (i.e. being hit by someone not following the track rules) is worrying; 99.99% of faster and slower (nit many of them!) cars were fine, but there was an element that were reckless.

As for the car, both on the journey to and from it was wonderful and I was staggered by how great it felt on the track.

There were some mechanical issues and worries:

  1. I need to get new top mount bushes for the front struts as there was vibration under hard, downhill braking.
  2. I suspect a subsequent, faster trip might reveal limits of the brakes, although they were plenty powerful this time.
  3. I don't properly fit in the car with a crash helmet on as I'm a bit too tall.
  4. A roll cage - even half cage - might be sensible if it became a real habit.
I'm hooked on the car though. I think this was a bit make or break - it's too fast to fully utilise on the road, so it needed to acquit itself on the track to make sense, and it did. Sounded lovely too.

Spent most of the first day outside the track helping a colleague of mine film so i got the chance to see most of you guys driving around.

The TVR and Niggel's VW rocket were especially standing out!!

Second day i arrived at the car park where Roy pointed Niggel out for me but it was a bad time when i arrived there as you were trying to back the VW in the car park spot. Lots of people around and didn't want to be in your way so stayed there observing the car a lil bit mate.

Very nice indeed. You can tell tons of work have been done on the car and i like how it is all more function than show.

Really sorry about the incident. How did that happen anyway, if you dont mind sharing Nigge.

Regarding the trackday it was all very well organised as always.

First day was a lot more better as the second one had a few more red flags than normal.

I managed to go out three times and all three times go red flagged in the middle of the first lap.

I'm surprised by the number of red flags, although I did not go this trip I have done other DN days and bar the odd incident they have generally been pretty trouble free.

Red flags due to crashes can be just a matter of a few unlucky seconds sometimes.

Not that it can't be someone driving recklessly.
From what i saw most people driving these two days were aware of where they were and what they were there to do.

So sometimes it happens it is understandable.

All in all two good days i think. smile

Only in-car footage I got of my first ever visit. Skip through the first bit, because a slow, warm-up lap was made even slower by yellow flags, to where the Carrera GT hoons past at around 9mins in.

Main aims for the trip.

  1. Enjoy the car
  2. Do some laps of the 'Ring - a bucket list thing
  3. Do not crash
  4. Do not get in anyone's way
  5. Do not think about setting lap times
  6. DO NOT CRASH
I think I covered all the main points there. hehe

I'm no expert but I couldn't fault that. Very clear calm and collected. Lines looked great, seemed like you had good awareness, should keep you safe for some time.

Thanks. My main objectives of not crashing or hindering other cars was covered! I'd had the benefit of being in the car with Nige - so driving as slowly as I did was never going to induce panic! I'd also had passenger laps with a couple of racing drivers (E46 M3 and a 997 GT3) too, so that all helped.

I could see where either carrying more corner speed or later braking would yield big improvements, but on the case of the latter, the suspension judder (you can hear the GoPro rattling fiercely on the video at times) made me decide caution, and being able to drive the car home again, was the sensible option.

I had a great week as we managed to get a track day at the 'ring on the Monday, Spa on the Wednesday and DN16 Thursday & Friday. A lot of cars at DN16 but Thursday was a good day for me as the track was always open really when I needed it. I had a minor off on Thursday night which spoiled Friday but that is the way it goes.

A nice bunch of people so it was good to meet you all apart from the 'people' who did burn outs at the Tiergarten Hotel on Tuesday morning at 0600hrs waking the whole hotel and probably all the neighbours up. You are very special indeed....

I have never seen so many breakdowns and accidents at the Galgenkopf area as we had at DN16 this year compared to next to nothing (?) between Hohe Acht and Brunchen.

See you next year.
N.

Was it your car I saw having its brake pads swapped in the Tiegarten hotel car park on Wednesday evening? Top DIYing.

Anyway, my favourite of Jochen's pics of my car:

Yes that was me. Extra points as I had an afternoon track day at Spa the same day, drove back to Nurburg, caught the DN induction and then swapped the front pads for RS29's before dinner at 8pm in the hotel. Not done the front pads on a GT3 before but I couldn't believe how simple it was. The 996 count was high at DN16 which is good to see.

Yes. Just lovely cars.

Did the DIY pad swap require any special tools? IIRC, somewhere in the garage I have an old Ford Sierra brake re-wind tool from my TVR days.
