Possibly a new challenge for the new year.

Turbo mx5 will entertain all day long and will go on forever as long as its been done correct plenty of companies offer drive in drive out conversation for around 2-2.5k. Get a good standard mx5 suspension/brakes/tyres etc and turbo converted for around 5k.
Or get a kit car but budget is small for kit car.

With the best will in the world the E36 is a heavy car, until you get into the realms of fibreglass and perspex, at which point your budget is blown.
.
Not really, easy even caged to be 1150kg, by comparison my mk1 mx5 s/c'd was 1050kg with the usual half cage set up. .
PS the mx5 with power route is a cracker, I like 36s & have had lots same with mx5s, the mxs are a good deal more playful, have steering feel that the bimmers can only dream of, the low spec sc & turbo cars are not that quick tho, most quoted power figs are isually dreamworld & its not cheap to build a really good spec.
PPS, if you really like bimmers but fancy going lighter, go the 328 transplant into a compact route, 6 pot growl & grunt, more playful rear & can get it at around 1000kg in track spec.

You see, for me that's a heavy trackday car. When you can have a stripped hatchback weighing a quarter of a tonne less, there's definite room for improvement.
Agreed, anything 1K+ is not light or easy on consumables imo, but it's all relative I suppose.E-bmw said:

Why don't you get a race license, an extinguisher and a master switch and do some testing? Then you can time your laps and share your track time with other track prepped cars.
The only thing with that, is it means the car HAS to conform to certain standards & if it doesn't, I may need a different cage for instance & I REALLY can't be bothered with going that far. There's always the option of upping the 2.8 to a 3.0 engine, for less than £2k
Motorhole is doing a 3.0 M52 build and with the right parts, is cheap, reliable but can put the power up to near M3 levels.

F0xy's thread is worth investigating too.
