Looking for a fun and interesting track car....on a budget..
Discussion
^^^^cant argue with that, a caterfield around £5-7k is probably best bang for buck. I was seriously looking for a Westfield Megabusa before I got in to my current track car. My only reservation was how robust these are in a crash (given that there are 1.8T r35s you are sharing track with) and the faff of when it rains.

Not quite sure what your question is - I believe a £2k e36 + 10k mods would be a far more capable track car than a bone stock £12k elise.Edited by EvoIV NL on Friday 30th September 16:02

OP,
You want to have a low budget, standard to then modify? I appreciate the "journey" aspect, but IMO you'll end up with less than just going for a good westie, or Sylva/Raw Striker / fisher Fury etc at 6-7k. They're brilliant track weapons - and because they're so light, the costs of the day are loads less as well (tyres, brakes etc). You can also modify them, but no-one will notice because all the interesting mods are not cosmetic.
If you are hell bent on making yourself a track car starting at 3k, then IMO those hot Clios are a good FWD choice, a cosmetically bad Boxster might just scrape in there (but running / modding won't be that cheap), MX-5 obvious but slow, or go full retard and get an old Jap saloon job (impreza or similar) that seem popular on track days but I have no idea why.

Do you want to enjoy building a track car, or do you want to enjoy driving a track car? It's a matter of priorities.

i find the assertion questionable, but i can see the challenge.CABC said:

it would be a good experiment for someone to video diary about!
even if your 10k of mods made the e36 'better', i suspect it wouldn't take many £ hundreds for the elise to catch up. all subjective of course. i've tried many seriously quick heavy cars, and they're just not fun for me, despite their competence and faster lap times.
Here's a £12k Elise that an E36 328 won't get anywhere near:

Plus, it's still worth £12k. You won't see much of £10k into an E36 back again, so the cost of ownership is far higher compared to an Elise (or Caterham).

Ooooooh I do like that and I would consider a change for my S2 111s for it.http://classifieds.seloc.org/ads/lotus-elise-s1-20...
