If you're going to be put off by weather, don't even consider booking anything there in advance.
Unfortunately track days there book up waay in advance, so you've not really any choice but to take the gamble I think.

Anglesey is a wonderful circuit. If the weather is poor then it does feel exposed, but the circuit is wide, plenty of elevation changes and the scenery is wonderful.

Well worth a visit.

Agreed but I'd picked Rockingham as it is frequently overlooked and only a short run from the much overrated Bedford.

I use Bedford as a cheap local alternative to Silverstone. Rockingham is about the same distance and journey time, but I've never felt any great desire to try it. When I watch onboard videos threre isn't anything that excites me.

As for Oulton Park, isn't that in the country known as "oop north"? Seriously though I know it has a reputation as being a great circuit, and I will give it a go, but probably not next year.
The reason for the thread is that it's easy to find opinions on the merits of most of the UK's circuits, but it's harder to find people who have an opinion on Anglesey.

It's south of Anglesey...

Indeed, unless coming from somewhere in wales you virtually pass the door to get to Anglesey

The OP would drive past the door of Oulton for another 100 miles or so to get to Anglesey I think.

So you haven't tried it but you don't like it? confused

I just googled the time for travelling from Northampton to Cadwell Park and Brands Hatch (two tracks you suggested were local enough to travel to in your OP) and they both came out at 2&1/2 hours.

Time from Northampton to Oulton Park? 2&1/2 hours.

I understand your query about Anglesey and I think most of the answers on here are entirely correct. I'm not so sure about your reasons for avoiding Oulton and Rockingham, they are both well worth a trip compared to Bedford (or Brands come to that).

Sorry, I hadn't intended to be dismissive of Oulton. I know it's not as far as Anglesey, and it's a straightforward motorway journey. I don't tend to think of Brands as being that far because it's a part of the world I visit often. I also find myself in Norfolk and Lincolnshire on occasion, so Snetterton and Cadwell are journeys I am familiar with. But somehow I never find myself in the Northwest, hence the 'oop north' jest.
I'm trying to put together a trackday budget for 2017. If I don't do Anglsey, there's a good chance I'll do Oulton instead. However I really would like to give the Anglsey circuit a go. It looks like my idea of fun, and a good match for my car.

Yes. I'm judgmental like that. wink

Actually you make a good point. Bedford isn't that special, it's just local. Normally I just book a day at Bedford in between more interesting trackdays. So I should give Rockinhgam a chance. I'll seriously consider it when I'm looking at dates during the year.

Worth signing up with Lotus-On-Track if you're not already a member (and take a look at '2017 diary dates' thread at the forum).

I drove from Aberdeen the day before and back after the track day so It was 9hrs each way with the Trophy R.

It pissed down all morning so all the open tops etc packed up and went home as there was no sign of it letting up. Having come so far we had a few cups of tea between laps in the morning and like a switch the sun came out after lunch and it was awesome. Looking back the rain actually helped us slow down and learn the track.

Lovely track.

I really think Rockingham is a great fun circuit to drive. Lots of people don't fancy it but keep going back to Bedford, until they actually try it and see how good it is.

I joined L-o-T for the first time this year. Did three trackdays and a CarLimits airfield day. All very enjoyable. I will certainly be doing 2 or 3 next year, but some of the tracks I'd like to do are on dates that don't suit me unfortunately.

Went with a group of mates a couple of years ago in Caterhams + 1 Elise from Berkshire. Drove up day before, drove down the day after.

It absolutely lashed it down all day for the track day, with standing water on the track, driving wind & hrs of horizontal rain, which meant driving it in Caterham's was zero fun. One of the group did one session then called it a day. I was easily overtaken by a Fiat 500 (R400 Caterham) LOL. All the lightweight cars were aquaplaning all over the place, anything with narrow tyres & a roof were having a great time !

However, the track is an excellent layout and on a dry (or even semi-dry 1) day would be superb for an Elise. It's on our list of "must do again" tracks, even though the actual track day was the worst we've ever had due to the weather.

On the plus side, it was sunny the day before and the day after, so the journey to and from Angelsey via mid-Wales then through Snowdonia were spectacular.

If you're in a lightweight car like an Elise or caterfield, it's a great track. Coastal is the best layout - GP just adds abit of point and quirt, and robs you of the corkscrew.

It's still flat though, so it's no Cadwell. In a Caterham that's my fave track bar none - so rewarding when you get the flat left / turn once and apex 3 corners later at full throttle bit right.

That corkscrew section really appeals to me. My car is fairly light with modest power, so that's the sort of thing that should suit it well.

I didn't think it was that flat? I was under the impression there was a bit of elevation.

Flat is a scale, really =)
It's not as flat as Silverstone or Croft. It's a lot flatter than Oulton, Knockhill, Cadwell, Brands, Donny. Less flat than Snetterton too, from memory.
I guess in my head, it's just not in the category where the elevation changes really define the circuit. Tell you the best bet - you tell me your view once you'v driven it =)*

  • By this I mean get it booked chap, corkscrew is indeed much fun!

It's favourably banked in turn 2, massively uphill into Rocket and downhill into the right handed after, and then steeply downhill through the corkscrew... not a flat circuit.
