Another french option - 106 Gti. Excellent on track with a couple of tweaks, lift off oversteer on demand, and just as quick as a MI 205 with a couple of minor tweaks from standard, as i proved at brunty this year. Brakes are fine, just need some better pads to stop any fade. Very cheap to maintain. New standard pads - £12 for fronts (they can be cheaper but do you really want to skimp ?). I used a set of these at the track day and they were fine ! Still on the car now. Valeo Clutch £70, Disks £40 for front grooved ones... you get the picture

Waht about somebody like track-club? For full arrive & drive for a season is less than 3k, and if you don't mind tacking the car there and back it starts at something like a grand!

Having done my first track day in my 1.6 gti, I say that the 205 was a great car. I've got -ve camber leda shocks and there wasn't much that was quicker through the bends. although most stuff was quicker down the straights

With 3K I'd avoid anything with a turbo as there a pain if you haven't got the cash to maintain them.

I also have an e30 m3 but took the pug because if it blows up and engine will cost less than £100 and if i crash it i've lost next to nothing.
