So the theory is, cheap flight to germany, pick up a reasonable hire car, go for a few laps to'get the feel for it', return hire car, fly home.

Anyone done anything like this or is it a mad idea?

Anyone know if german hire companies exclude a certain 'public road'?

A lot of Ringers do this (especially from the States), although some of the hire companies are getting wise to it.

Hire car of choice appears to be the BMW Z4.

I've heard of this, with an Amercian chap doing it every year. He hires a BMW, changes the suspension at a local garage, does the weekend, changes the suspension back and returns it.

Apparently, the last time he did it, the hire place complained about the state of the tyres + brakes. he said something like "Alpine roads are a killer" + left. Hire company deducted money from his credit card, and last I heard he was suing them.

I've done this the last few years, with a Z4 as well.
Gave it back this year with around 1mm left on the front pads (checked as the brakes felt terrible at the end of the final day there). Must be those twisty roads Guv.

You do need a healthy amount of denial though, if you crash or are crashed into it could get awkward with the hire company.

The only problem is not knowing what engine you will get, last year I got a 2.5 Z4, this year it was a 2.2 and noticably slower on the straights and up the hills. Wouldn't pull the same peak revs in top!

You can pay extra per day (can't remember how much now but not a lot) to reduce the excess down to a maximum of around 70 euro's. Worthwhile, just in case of any car park dings, ahem.

I have driven loads of hirecars around the Ring (allegedly ).

As you say:
Flight, hirecar, lappage, return flight, with perhaps a VLN race in the middle somewhere (but not in the hirecar, as it would be deemed an unfair advantage).

A couple of friends have been banned from hiring Hertz cars, as Hertz have secret people who look at Ring photo websites for their numberplates, then dob them in to HQ. Partypoopers. So I generally use Sixt or Europcar.

Ive done it. Gatwick to Koln/Bonn for about 30 quid rtn, hired a car for the 1hrs drive to the ring. Then I, erm, got out and watched everyone having a great time.
When you return the car make sure you're not wearing your recently purchased Nurburgring baseball cap. If you get a 320td estate I did it in 9.50 (on the playstation of course )

Yeah I borrowed a boxter from Avis back in Aug this year. The clutch was playing up a bit, and it finally packed up whilst going through Hatzenbach, fortunately managed to convince the marshalls to let me push it off the Ring at the bridge.

Porsche assist came and took the vehicle away, Avis then added a further €4000 to my credit card! Saying the damage had been done on the circuit, Despite telling them that it is a road, and blah blah blah, they refuse to credit me with the said money. So im having to go through a solicitor at the moment.

So my advice, dont bother!

There was a car programme on last week, where one of them flew into Frankfurt.

The Avis there will hire you a 997 for 170E per day, and it turned out to
be an S, the person did some fast motorway miles, then some laps of the ring, stayed over
and returned it the next day.

Surely someone else on here watched it ???

it was either 5th gear, or Driven or summink like that.

sounds like a hoot though !!!
