OK, so where on earth do i go to get a helmet. I've tried GPR and they've got nowt in stock. Same story with Demon Tweeks, nothing in stock in my size.

Anywhere else to try?

Surprised GPR have nothing - what is your size?? To be honest mate at this time of year best place to shop is Autosport show - take cash and you'll get as good a deal as possible.

GPR are the best place for Arai helmets, although Stand 21 usually have a stand as will Stilo this year. Spend £300 and you'll get a nice lid.

Was after a Bell K1Sport in XL, had a large at GPR but it was a bit tight and they were out of XL (to be fair they did have a bit of a rush at christmas). Tried a few sparcos and they fitted really well but had no decent chin vents so gets a bit stuffy. First decent Arai is about £120 extra, keeping in mind it would be ghood to get somethjing with the right certifications for racing). Might go to Autosport just for the hell of it, depends what DT have got in stock this weekend, and whether i can wangle as free ticket from the marshals club.

If you take cash the extra saving you'll get on a helmet will more than pay for an admission ticket. One the size front - I take it you drive an open car (hence the need for chin vents? cos no vents work in a closed saloon) and it is not a bad idea to get a closer fitting helmet because the air pressure in an open car at speed will try and lift the helmet.

Merlin Motorsport?
I got my OMP Intergrale Plus from Merlin Motorsport's Castle Combe shop www.merlinmotorsport.com/product_info.php?cPath=1901_2083_2089&products_id=5712
I could have got it about £15 cheaper on the web, but I prefer dealing with a shop - the circuit's local to my home, and I could make sure the size was right.

Yep id advise http://rallynuts.com/motorsport too! I got all of my race kit from them! They are also cheaper than GPR and Deamon Tweeks.

No, closed saloon. Need chin vents to breathe through. The OMP i hired at Outlon was really nasty with the chin vents shut.

A Stand21 lid might be right for you. I have ordered the Double Duty, which has interchangeable visor and peak so I can jump into saloons or single seaters easily. It is also set up for HANS.

Stand21 also do a helmet-cooling device. Read about it here:

How much did you pay for yours? They look fabulously expensive.

I got a very good deal through a friend, to include my own helmet design with chrome and the HANS device. Retail price for that lot would be just under 2K.

The lid on its own is around £750-ish. Hans adds to the safety even more, whilst the paint-job is useful for knowing which driver is in the car (we do endurance events), plus making the team look more professional and attractive to sponsors.

Yes, it does seem like a lot, but you do get a helmet that is fitted to your own head and lighter than the slightly lower priced alternatives.

Your head is the most important part of your body, so buy the most expensive one you can afford.

Maximum budget is £400 for mine (same as my car cost). Don't need a paintjob really as it's only for trackdays for the immediate future.

In that case you might be better off looking at bike helmets? They tend to be a heck of a lot cheaper than car helmets, and are far easier to get hold of.

They are, but i'm told that they're not as resistant to the occasional bump and knock (from clumsiness getting in/out). True/false? Should i rename this thread "Which Helmet do i buy", as i really don't have any idea what i need.

Would now be a bad time to say Snell2000?

I don't think there are many helmets that will put up with being bashed against things. I'm not aware of bike helmets being particularly worse than car ones from that point of view. The main difference with car helmets is that they are cut slightly differently at the back, and they cost a lot more for the same spec, and if money is no object you can get very exotic lightweight ones. If you're going international racing then you will need to meet the appropriate FIA spec, for national racing you just need to meet one of the MSA standards. When I bought mine bike helmets were all approved to BS8085 which was an MSA approved standard, but the standards do evolve over time. For track days it has to look like a helmet.

I was told by someone who i can't remember, that car helmets are more durable, but bike helmets sould be inspected/replaced after even the slightest of knocks. Different construction and all that. If that's not the case then i'll go for the best of whatever i can get.

Looks like i'm off to Autosport next week then.

I have two AGV Demon vent helmets. One black and one with all the fancy graphics on it £110 for the plain black £150 for the graphics. I like them as they have two vents on the top and one in the chin area
