The main difference with car helmets is that they are cut slightly differently at the back, and they cost a lot more for the same spec, and if money is no object you can get very exotic lightweight ones.

The main differences are often the size of the visor aperture and the fact that most car helmets are nomex lined. To the best of my knowledge NO bike helmets are fireproof. Only the more expensive car helmets (mostly for single seaters, have the aero features around the back of the lid. Good bike helmets are often lighter than the car equivalents, unless we're talking about carbon lids....

Maximum budget is £400 for mine (same as my car cost). Don't need a paintjob really as it's only for trackdays for the immediate future.

Mate I'll make it dead easy. Go to GPR and ask for a GP5-K forget anyone else as GPR will fit the helmet properly for you.

Tried a few sparcos and they fitted really well but had no decent chin vents so gets a bit stuffy.

To be honest if its for the E30 in your profile you wont get any benefit with a chin vent especially if your wearing a balaclava in a tin top

Just a personal thing, i hate breathing stuffy air. With the dash vents open and pointing at the helmet it made a real difference with the vents open/shut on that hired OMP heap-o-crap i had at oulton.

It's now a straight fight between the Bell K1-S and the Arai GP5k. I must say the £200 difference is counting towards the bell at the moment, but haven't tried either an XL K1s or any Arai. Demon Tweeks stock both, so i'll give them a ring tomorrow to check what sizes theyve got and go and annoy them all for a while.
I'm not keen to go back to GPR as i specifically phoned them before i went to check they had everyhting they listed on the website.

"Yes, of course we have everything, it's our warehouse" - on the phone
"No, sorry, not in that size" - repeat for every model after wasting a morning driving to silverstone

Arai say...
Are there differences between helmets for motorcycle and car race use?

Yes!
To start with: car race helmets are equipped with fire resistance Nomex material. The shield system is stronger (but lacks the streamlined 'holders' of the motorcycle models) and the material of the shield thicker due to regulations. The visor opening is (much) smaller for some models, while the shape of the outer shell differs.

Car race helmets are approved with the worldwide SNELL approval, due the fact that these helmets are intended for race us only. Mototcycle helmets are developed also for normal street use, but they are in fact the same helmets as used by the racers in the various racing disciplines (road racing, motorcross etc).

Some governments demand a national approval for theur country, for instance the UK the BSI 6658 Type A, while other European countries demand the ECE 22-04 approval while in Japan the JIS approval is required.
If you go for the Arai GP5K helmet, you may want to try Rallynuts as they stock the same model but for £31 cheaper!I know its not much but every little helps.

Well whatever i get it's not going to be from GPR. Phoned this morning, specifically checked that they had a K1Sport SV in XL and was told tehy did. Great, cleared the diary for tomorrow morning. Mrs persuaded me to check again this afternoon based on past experiences, and guess what..... no XLs lince before Christmas.

Waste of time, shan't bother again.
