I think you are totally missing the point. At what point did Evo state that their intention was to increase the value of the car? Has Evo ever tried to increase the value of a car?!

The whole point of the project has been to provide them with a challenge and good reading for the rest of us.

Its ok saying 'would of, could of, should of' but they picked a car which would obviously be hard work getting near 8 minutes ... in standard trim, the car should lap in the 8:30's, so knocking 30 seconds was always going to be tough, but not impossible...

It has proved far more interesting than say putting a Fireblade engine in a go-cart ... I mean Caterfield which would have been a far lesser challenge....

On a personal note, it gave me the interest to go out and acheive something similar, but better, again with an M3 GT, but learning from their mistakes.
