Hi all,

Quick question, does anyone know if Tesco's do track day insurance? I thought I had read on here that some people had been covered by them - but I just called them and apparently they do not cover track days on any of their policies, anyone have any experience to the contrary? I only ask because I know things can differ greatly depending on the operator you talk to.

Alternatively does anyone know any way I can cover myself for track day without swapping insurer i.e. are there insurers who will cover you for just one day, or is this a ridiculously expensive route?

Cheers

Competition Car Insurance will cover you for a Track Day. (Google will find it for you...)

And yes it is ridiculously expensive.

Interesting. I got a good quote from Tesco last week. So I called the number to ask about track days:

"I'll have to ask for you sir....[pause]....yes sir, provided they are not timed or competitive",

"are you sure, they're on racetracks, I'll have a helmet on and might write off someone else's Tuscan?"

"yes, providing you weren't racing it. Wotcha got? Chimaera! Oh I'd love one of them, missus won't let me get one though........... "

Not convinced, I called again next day, same question.

"I'll have to ask for you sir....[pause]....yes sir, provided they are not timed or competitive"

"What about excess?"

"Your normal policy excess applies"

"Excellent" I says, then gets insurance elsewhere (for other reasons that I won't go into).

Has anyone with Tesco insurance got any evidence of track day cover that it says you need for track days?

Just make sure you ask them to put it in writing to you.

I called Liverpool Victoria last week and had the same conversation, I asked for them to put it in writing and I recieved a nice letter, stating just what I wanted to hear!

I have a copy of a letter from the technical director of Priviledge insurance explaining this.

It details, generically, why you would be covered on a Priviledge policy (this was before they changed hands though) and how that relates to other companies polcies, following basic law and insurance rules.

In a nutshell - if you're not racing, rallying or timing... AND not being reckless/dangerous (this could be argued!!) then you are covered UNLESS the policy SPECIFICALLY excludes it.

I've done about 40 track days on this basis, and 6 trips to the Nurburgring... mind you I always stay within my limits, am careful and thus have never had an accident.

AFAIK Tesco are Privilege are Direct Line (lot of consolidation in Motor insurance at the moment, NU claim to insure 1 in 5 cars now!)...anyway, just got wife's renewal from Direct Line and they have:

- added a definition of a Track Day to the policy.
- specifically excluded them.

Not that this will bother her in her 1.2 Clio, but my Elise is with Privilege...bet I don't get track cover next year :-(

Just out of interest, and strictly on a no-names-no-pack-drill basis, what would a reasonable premium have been for Folembray? i.e. Cost of all damage/number of participants * reasonable profit margin?

I'll have to check my Privilege policy wording as I asked abotu track days when I bought the policy last year and was told "okay as long as not racing, rallying or competitive". I took their word on it, but haven't check the T&C's in detail.

I believe there are currently 34 insurers in the UK, so those 'hundreds' of different policies are either variations by broker negotiation, or bull!

I'm currently with Egg (=privelege=tesco) and when I took out the policy last june that included track cover. Must be getting wise to it now as the cover note I got when insuring a hire car in march specifically excluded track days. I sent a letter asking how they could change the terms of my policy mid term, but as you should expect from Egg - no response.

There must have been £10k of damage thanks to the pesky tyre wall, 40 people, £250 a go + profit

All a complete guess of course

I have just asked Tesco (twice)and the answer was a categoric NO. On both occasions they asked their underwriters and the answer came back that any track event is NOT covered. There is also no premium which you can pay to include it.

But I bet they couldn't they point out which part of the policy specifically excluded track days, or was it just purely on their word of mouth (i.e. not worth the paper it is written on).

If it isn't in print in your policy documents it isn't legal! They cannot restrospectively change the terms of your policy just becuase they want to - unless that is in the policy document as well.

Yes you are right, but they said they had not covered track days since last October, and were not prepared to. I asked why it was not in the policy document, and they said it was on the certificate which I did not have to hand. I am not happy about the situation, and will check the certificate when I see it.

I had a horrible feeling that this would be the case. Why is it that I have never come across an insurance company that gives a consistent answer to a persistent question, it always seems to depend upon if you are speaking to someone who enjoys there job or who quite obviously would rather be some where else…….I always seem to get the latter.

Think I’ll check all my documents and try again.

I was with Tesco (until today that is). I was ringing around to get a better deal on my renewal, and no-one would cover for track days.

Even though, like someone said earlier, on two separate occasions Tesco said they did cover them. Now they don't. Anyone else I rang (usual large insurance firms) said they do not cover track days.

I am far more likely to believe the fact they do not cover trackdays, than hope they do because of some small print technicality. Err on the side of caution.

Though I still believe the usual well run track day is a safe place than the public roads.

I took a policy out with Tescos for my Elise in March. The premium includes insurance for 3 track days - the excess goes up from £250 to £400.

I have phoned them 4 times and the story is the same each time. No timetrialling or racing and you let them know in advance.

I have my e30 M3 on a classic policy with Aon. It includes trackday cover at £25 per event. You have to let them know when and where but that's it.

Ouch!

No trackday cover on my direct line policy, so..

Just been quoted 220 quid (!) for 1 day trackday cover on my 18K car. With 15% excess, 2700!

I guess I'll forget it for this year, and get a sensible policy next....

I would add to the comment above re Liverpool Victoria - they did a fantastic quote on my 911 RS (about 1/3 of what others were quoting!) and included track day cover at no additional cost, no additional excess and I don't need to inform them of the individual dates.

I asked them for a letter confirming the track day cover. Initially they said that they couldn't do anything out of the ordinary, but when I read them the note above (that someone else had got it in writing) they agreed to write to confirm cover. Overall: friendly people, excellent quote and track day cover included! Try and speak to someone called Mark if possible.

I'm having a nightmare trying to get track insurance to drive at the Millbrook test facility in Bedford. Having read a section on insurance on the website it appears that unless the T&Cs of your policy exclude it and there is no competetion element to the day(which there isn't) then you are covered.

I have rung the insurance company and they seemed to indicate that they wouldn't cover track days with a barge pole.......but if there is no competition element and specific exclusions in the Ts & Cs then I should be fine right??
