So you would pay £34k whether someone was a contractor or permie? Eh?

A contractor as an Ltd type will cost £30/hr.

Does not compute.

Thank-you DJRC for pointing this out ... but what is your point??

Clearly with a Ltd company contractor, we would not have to pay Employers NI or Holiday Pay, so yes can PAY higher rate, but £30/hr is c.£55k cost to the business based on a 40hr week.

A £34k salary will cost us c.£42.5k

I assumed that there are people out there who may be looking for work and may be interested in a job, which is why I posted in the JOB forum ... Simply stating that we could consider contractors.

As a Chartered Manufacturing Engineer and 6 Sigma Black Belt, with some experience in supplier quality in the Automotive Industry, I think I'd like to say what I think his point is.

£34k is too little in todays current climate. Too many jobs for engineers chasing Too few decent engineers.

That's it. You'll get applications, but there will be (maybe hidden) reasons why they are prepared to under sell themselves. There's usually a reason that people are desperate.

Personally I've recently turned down permanent jobs on considerably more than that, solely because they still couldn't match what I'm able to get as a ltd company contractor.

I understand (you a contact) that JLR are needing 2000 extra engineers over the next 3 years and at Rolls Royce, they are filling offices with Contract Supplier Development engineers at present, as 2 massive projects move from development into production.

But nice of you to let people know what's about. Hopefully there's a graduate with a years or so experience that will see it as a decent step up.

My point was simply that £34k permie is about on the money, but it wont attract the contractors. If you wish to attract them its £30/hr. There are those who will do £20/hr but they will be much less experienced and that is still more than your £34k permie salary.

  • smiles knowingly* I happen to be exactly in that position, and happen to be actively searching for a job. It's nice to see how many more engineering roles are available compared to 1/2 years ago.

Maybe not supplier quality, I've done all sorts of engineering in my short career, including a role in quality engineering. There are plenty of positions about, fingers are crossed someone will take me on for one of them.
