As above I have been offered a job as a negotiator with an Estate agent chain in the South West. They are a well known company that deal with the upper end of the market such as coast and country type houses in nice areas.

I have been in sales for some time but not estate agency although the position is not officially a trainee position. The company work on a basic salary plus a % share of the pooled earnings for that office. The basic I have been offered is close to what I thought it would be but the commission is quite a bit less. I understand the usual for people earning commission on their own sales is normally around 10%?

Also what is normal for car use. They say they will offer an amount per mile but is it normal to get a car allowance as well to cover wear and tear, insurance, etc?

What % have they offered?

I was on 10k basic and 10% from memory, but it wasn't a team based thing, all individual.

£4-6k average, 2-3 a week.

15k basic plus 2% of pooled office earnings. I have spoken to a couple of friends of friends since my previous post who have worked in estate agency for quite a few years who reckon this is about right for the S.West, the company I work for and the fact I am new to estate agency. Once I have proven myself then I may be able to push it up a little as they review salaries yearly. Also I have been lucky to get in with a company that is at the top of the game in this region so if I ever have to change will look great on my CV...

Might have missed something but, depending on the number of people in the office, 2% of pooled earnings might exceed 10% of individual earnings.

eg 5 people making 10 sales = 1 person maing 2 sales ?

Yes that would be true however there will be 2 people to start with, three next year and hopefully growing from there. I have been told that in the offices with more staff the commission rates are lower...

What firm is it?

And why are there only two people there one of which has never done it before? If its a new office that doesn't really sound that encouraging, I'd want proven staff starting a new office...

Yeah I know what you mean, the add for the job asked for experienced negotiators so either there are none about or I'm better than I thought at interviews smile

Pm me if you want, I worked for one of the largest in the uk with offices everywhere. Rhymes with Lamptons.

They expanded very rapidly but had to shut a few offices as it was too much too soon!

I would be a little concerned, it is pretty tricky to open new estate agency offices, you need lots of experience of comparable so that you can get the valuations right and win good instructions. The sales part of agency is winning instructions, you cannot really sell a house in my opinion, except when booking the viewing.

I used to own 5 offices in the Southwest and was pleased to sell them when I did
