I always find myself here every year or so, I get myself to a stage where I like what I do, I don't dread work, and there are prospects I suppose (although not sure management would be for me so options are somewhat limited) but I just don't care about it. I regularly look around at other things to see if anything jumps out, and this probably has led me to have a few jobs in totally different sectors (albeit working in sales).

So what have you done to try and find a calling, or maybe even something that you're passionate about, something that you look forward to tackling each day.

I am lucky in some respects, I have got myself into one of the largest companies in the uk, although many jobs come up internally, how do I know it would work, and how would they know I would work etc...

I know I should be grateful of a job
And all that guff, but just wanted to see what others have done when they hit "meh"

i discovered as an undergraduate that i really enjoyed the subject i studied. I am a researcher studying that subject. I find, similar to you I guess, that if i get bored or 'meh' I just change to a slightly different area and my passion is rekindled.

I suppose that moving sideways is always possible, but would that hinder moving up over time?

Don't know, I often consider different jobs/careers. Nice to know i'm not alone!

I love doing practical things - electrics, plumbing, woodwork, DIY. I probably wouldn't want to do some of those things for clients though. I do get jealous, like tonight I had to have the national grid out to fix a leaking gas meter, at the guys that do jobs like that....

... beats being an accountant any day to me.

However I have a mortgage, my job pays and is fine and want a family soon so kind of stuck. Hey, at least I'll beable to buy a decent car one day.

Have you thought that perhaps sales isn't for you? If you have been moving from sales job to sales job with no joy and no interest in management.. is it worth trying to find a different career?

I tried sales but hated it. Nothing wrong with that.. just be honest with yourself. I have met several people who do sales only for the money while hating every moment of it. I felt sorry for some of the older sales guys stuck on the front line for so many years.. clearly not enjoying themselves.

Of course nobody can tell you how to find what you like doing....what are you interested in? Do you have any hobbies that perhaps you could turn into a job? Have you thought about trying to move into marketing? Or setting up your own business?

That could well be it to be honest.

Regarding hobbies, I only really cycle these days and I don't know enough to have a business in it, and equally don't think I'd want to work with it.

Marketing is an interesting one, I've thought about it, and often wondered what the transition from sales to marketing is, but I've been put off by the lower pay, but I suppose that is always going to happen in the short term.

Why did you suggest marketing?

I say marketing because it is probably a realistic move if you have sales experience. On your point about them not being well paid, that may be true in the beginning but marketing directors are very very well paid indeed. I think most entry level marketing exec salaries are pretty similar to the basics of sales execs, if not more in some cases, and if you get into a decent firm you should get a nice bonus to make up for the lack of commission.

Every good marketing person on PH knows that sales is a facet of marketing . . .

i'm moving steadily towards a project management role. i like having an overview of everything, directing, making decisions, and ensuring everything gels. i dislike being the one who does all the minutae, researching dead ends, and coming up with umpteen configurations of the same thing for someone elses perusal.

currently working in development engineering and for the first time since graduating [8yrs ago] i really enjoy my job and the company i work for.
