I have no inside information on the AA (I'm sure another poster will have) other than being an occasional user...so from a customer perspective, if I was conducting the interview, I would be interested in:

Your demeanour; are you a good bloke who has plenty of smiles and positivity, which works wonders with a stranded customer on a cold, windy hard shoulder in January.
Your presentation skills; a smart clean turnout, both you and your van inspire confidence on said hard shoulder.
A knowledge of the risks to both you and your customer on that hard shoulder from other road users and how you would attempt to mitigate them.
Do you have any advanced driving experience or are you about to enrol on a course.
Do you have an advanced first aid experience or are you about to enrol on a course.
I would give you a few technical scenarios where you don't have the spare but you can temporarily fix to see how resourceful and adaptable you are.
I would demonstrate my willingness to be extremely flexible with shift patterns and even which locality you could cover.
I would wish to know more about what you have done to develop yourself profesionally since gaining your initial qualifications. I would be keen to know if you are always looking at new opportunities to improve those core competences.
A basic understanding of the roles of the emergency services, including the Highway Patrol boys, all of whom you will no doubt have some contact with at some point.

You probably know all this, but I hope it helps in some way. Drop me a PM if you want to cover interview techniques in more detail. Goid luck!

I was a patrol with the AA in 2001 and on my interview day you had to do a written test which was multi choice, a driving test and a practical test.
The practical tests are fairly straight forward as they only give you a couple of tools to choose from, but that doesn't matter now days as long as you can use a tow pole!
The tests were, cps disconnected, ign switch disconnected and fuel cut off switch.
The tests are not going to be to involved but they just want to make sure you use a good method when diagnosing faults.

Good luck and lets us know how you get on.

Mark.

I went to an interview for the RAC, there was only one short technical assessment the rest was focused customer service, dealing with difficult customers, conflict in the workplace, times you've gone beyond the call of duty etc.

Wear a suit too, I was told to wear one when I was offered the interview.
