Contracting - no sick days

Employed - 7 days, but i was in agony from a bout of tonsillitis. I am justified saying agony as I'd been going to work for a week with it and the doc said it was the worst he'd ever seen ("you have not been going to work with this, have you?") . Don't be an idiot and get to the doc's.

1 day over the last 3 years. I just don't get sick beyond the normal odd cold, which I don't see the point in calling sick for.
Also nice to get a bonus for 0% absence for the year.

I worked for 7 years never had a day off sick. Had one day due to drinking too much that was it.

I get ill, but never really that bad I can't be arsed to go to work.

It is funny, I bet the people working in sweat shops in 'insert third world country' never have sickies, people in this country seem to think it is a workers right.

It's those on long term sick that pump up the number.
Long terms most definitely do. I've been at my job for 3 and a bit years (teaching, state secondary) and had my first day off about 2 weeks ago. A few others who are similar.

Having been on PH a while, allow me to condense the next 10 pages for you;

"Not had a day off in 25 years of working"

"6 months with a back problem, 3 months after broke my knee"

"Unless you're on death's door, you should go to work"

"I don't want you in an office all snotty and spreading germs - stay at home".
biglaugh So true!

Sick days are like murder, once you've taken 1 and crossed the boundary, the next 50 are easy.

If one of my employee's text me to say they were sick i'd be instantly suspicious. If you are well enough to post on PH then you are well enough to pick up the phone.

What if they've lost their voice? :-)

It's interesting to speculate what would happen if your employer is a PHer and saw this thread......

Where I worked last I was treated pretty much like crap, so whenever I had a sniffle or a stuffy head I signed off. Why should I put myself out for a bunch of exploitative tossers? The first time I took a day off sick at that place was because I had a nasty sinus infection - could barely walk straight, felt deadly and had an unbelievable headache. On the second day I was meant to be interviewing so rather than inconvenience anyone I dragged myself in a did the interview, it was agony. The next two days I had to stay in bed. When I returned I was told I had to log it as two instances of sick, which would automatically result in a meeting with HR to 'discuss my attendance'. I said no, I'm not going to meet with HR and I'm not going to record it as two instances. And that was that. From that point on (and due to many other factors too) I didn't put myself out in any way, shape or form.

Texting in sick is a disciplinary offence at our place.
Same at my current job.

Previous job had an automated line you had to call before 9am, we called it the cop out line.
You had to personally call a director of the business - no texts, no emails, no getting someone else to call in.
Sickies reduced 75% overnight.

Well text rather than phone feeling guilty as its my 2nd day off in 2 months.

Whats the average amount of days of sick do people have from work nowadays.....
If there is a verb 'to text' do you really think that its simple past is 'text'? What the fk is your second paragraph supposed to be?

I've had about 7 this year. I hate my job.

Self Employed and Ltd Company Contractors.......Never unless DEAD.

When I was employed in the Private Sector I averaged about 2 a year.

Although last year I had a serious tummy bug and couldn't leave the (midweek) house for long enough to get Immodium, so had to have 2 days off. The cost of one bad mussel, is hard to bear.

Two days in fifteen years, for food poisoning. Never had anything bad enough to keep me out otherwise.

I find it hard to believe that others can manage four or five unrelated incidents per year for decades.

You must phone in personally? I've on two occasions not been able to call in sick myself; one of those I was at a doctors surgery having an ECG due to an amusingly variable heart rate, the other I lost an entire day to flu. No chance of phoning at the appropriate time in either case, so it was lucky that my GF could phone for me. Also, as I posted earlier: what if you lose your voice?
