I would have to close my business down if I was off sick.

What I find strange is that employees will ring in sick (usually on a Monday) and tell me that they'll be in the following day.
How do they know?

So did you go into the office??

I havent had a day off sick for as long as i can recall. Being self employed has that effect.

2 days off last year (dental absence)
0 days off the previous year
3 days off the previous year (car accident)
0 days off the year before that

Currently off sick with suspected glandular fever & it's really put me on my arse.

Waiting for results of blood tests & x-rays and looking to go back phased return next week depending on when the results are in. GP wont sign me back as fit to work until the results are back.

Have worked for the same company since 98 and am entitled to 120 days sick leave per annum - however if I took my full 'entitlement' then I think they might very well be having words with me!

2.5 days total in a year (year today as it goes! smile).
2 days after a car accident on the way to work, didn't get recovered for about 6 hours (snow last year, everything was up st creek frown). The next day I woke up with a banging headache & neck pains, knocked my head on the door frame in the accident and my job's pretty physical so would've been useless. Said to boss if it was as bad/worse tomorrow I'd get down to A&E, any better and I'd be in. I was in smile

And I got punched in the head one Sunday, and was working the Monday. I don't get sick pay so was desperate to make it in. After a few hours I had to leave, the pain was killing me. Went home and straight to bed, slept for about 15 hours hehe

Both times just because I was physically unable to do my job. It'd have to be very bad for any other reason. I just can't see the point in pulling a sickie to be honest confused

Never had a day off sick, my body is invinsable!

At my company, you have to call in sick personally (except in extreme circumstances), and then a meeting on your day back to explain why you were off.
And no pay for the first 3 days.

It seems quite effective at stopping the chancers.

I don't get paid for being off, but if I'm ill I'm ill.

I don't get this "I've had 2 days off in 10 years". You've probably caused more sick days for others by going in when sick... Life's too short to be a martyr.

Had a few in the last 3 years but mostly due to operations which I arranged for Friday evenings so instead of taking off a full week I only had to take 2 ½ working days off and there were 4 of those in the last couple of years.

I’m lucky as I can work from home and arrange how and when I deal with my work load to a large degree. A couple of weeks back I started a nasty little cold on the Sunday and was feeling like pooh on the Monday. I went in the office, dealt with the e-mails and post and then went home with a load of files and worked there so as not to give it to anyone else. I was still rough on the Tuesday but on the mend and could think straight without wedging half an andrex up my nose so went in and shut myself in my office.

We had a lot of Monday sickness up until a couple of years ago when we changed the policy to one where you had to call one of two specific people and if you didn’t speak to them they would call back. Staff were told that they were expected to be the ones to make the calls unless there were extreme circumstances such as loss of voice or in an ICU. If one were to take a look at the absence record you’d easily spot the month this rule came in, if not the day.

Most ‘amusing’ part of this were that those who had been the worst for taking sick days that might raise your eyebrows have since left for new jobs.

Interesting one.
I have had every year for the past 3 years at least 2 months off on the biff as a continuous sickness.
I have a lower spinal problem that did initially get better with treatment in the past (paid by work private) but gets worse each year.

I,m currently off again with at times excruciating sciatic pain in both legs.I can't stand for more than a minute without pain shooting down my legs.I end up doing a balancing act on my legs to shift the weight around to try and stop the pain.It doesn't.Even driving my car if I'm not careful how I move my legs results in shooting pain.

I've had the strongest co-codamol going and the pain is still there, only tramadol stops it.
I can't work with the pain and I can't work whilst buzzing on tramadol either.

I,m down for an MRI scan on my lower spine to find the problem and it could possibly lead to back surgery which means even more time off if thats the case.
I myself can feel that my lower spine is not working right. It feels like it grinds rather than flow if that makes any sense.

The work that I normally do is quite physical so I,m stuck in between a rock and a hard place re work duties.

I will be phoning the boss later on today as I,m currently on 3 weeks off and pish bored.I,m going to be asking if there is something I can do that is not physical on my legs and I can do whilst buzzing on tramadol and not be a risk to others.I would rather be doing something than nothing.

I will not be able to carry out my normal work duties so It's going to be a difficult one for the boss tbh.I want to go back, but the question is can the bossman have me in doing something given the circumstances.I hope so.

I,m also very aware that if this condition does continue, even if I have surgery,it could be the end of my career.Thats worry, not guilt.

Been with current employer over 4 years with no days off sick. Was with my old employer for 2 years with no sick days but was late once by about an hour because I was getting a dozen stitches in my head where my own dog had tried to eat me.
I'd need to be pretty much dead or dying to call in sick, too many people these days think a sniff and a sneeze is enough for 3 days off work!

I have a team of seven people work for me and I would say the average is 2 days a year, and that's massively slanted by one bloke who takes a staggering 5-6 days a year.

I have staff who've taken virtually no sick time in their time of employment. One woman has had one day that I can recall in a decade.

Every time I get annoyed at them I remember how phenomenally lucky I am on this front.

I took 3 one day occasions of sick in 6 years.

That was until earlier this year when I had three weeks and shattered my excellent sixk record. There's a thread in health matters about my Pilonidal Sinus, (even posted from Sunderland Royal bedside internet access no less) and there's a delightful picture at the end of the result of my operation.

Thankfully we get 6 months full pay at my place so no money worries when it happened smile

You really don't get it?

The point is that people are not actually sick that often, and in places where people are taking ten days a year on average (and who don't have genuine long-term illness), then most of them are lying.

People do not get flu five times a year.

The place I used to work at had a policy of sending you home if you were unwell. Didn't want things spreading around. Worked well and nobody took the piss.

Current place us 3 days this year.
1 for a dodgy mussel, 2 for a bad winter cold.

If someone has a cold I don't want them coughing all over me.
