Moving away from the commercial world one of the most profitable forms of work, not due to loading but due to actual hours in the saddle, most provincial firms undertake is dealing with Probate matters where someone has saved £100 by writing the Will themselves or employing "Will Writers".

Free Wills done by banks are also a false economy if the Bank are appointed as Executors (which they always try to insist on as hard as they dare). If you think a solicitor charges a lot for dealing with the administration of an estate we are stunned by the rates the banks charge.

Likewise I know a number of people who are working for Firms who do conveyancing for £250-300. It’s fricking scary what they do and don’t do for that fee, bare minimum would be a plush job. Added to which the Fee Earners are being asked to come in on weekends to clear the backlog for no extra pay – and these are not people like me earning a reasonable wage but people earning less than the national average.

Added to which, as Tonker says, if you can't see where the value is in using your solicitor than either your solicitor isn't that good at their job or explaining what they do to you or you've never seen what happens when it goes wrong.

I know and have had to deal with a few clients. I recall one that complained all the time that his previous lawyers 'weren't worth their fees' or 'their only objective was maximising the same........'.

To be avoided like the plague.

To be fair, I did know a binman who went on to become General Manager of a large Council Dept, of course by and large what you say will be true, but........

I think jonah35 is about right - City lawyers can earn large amounts of money but if you look outsiede the cities to small town solicitors/hack barristers you would be amazed at how little they earn. The chances of getting into a top law firm is horrendously small - you have to have gone to the right school, the right university/law school and got the very top marks - there are easier ways to earn much more money.
