Curious as to the usefulness of these.

Personally I'd probably take a modicum of interest in recommendations from clients or line managers, but not much else.

Would you take much notice of them if you were looking up a potential hire?

In my opinion it would depend who had made the recommendation. I don't have any.

I take notice of recommendations by people I know and respect.

One guy I interviewed a while back had recommendations from students on his Uni course.

Yes, always written by a mate. They are worth reading just for entertainment value.

Usually, cringeworthy, especially the really gushing ones.

The ones I have are from previous line managers and heads of sales functions who I have business partnered. I think does help.

Yes.

Gushy ones - ignore.
From "mates" - ignore.

From line managers & obvious clients - they seem to be the interesting ones. Agreed some are backscratchers (which might be obvious), but others, rather like obituaries, can be read and useful info gained.
