Does anyone know how you would go about geting into working in farming?

It's something i've always wanted to do, arable or livestock would do.

I know it hard, dirty work with long hours, but that doesn't bother me.

Is 35 too old to start looking to get into this line of work? and where would i start looking? it's not like i've ever seen a farmer job advertised in the job centre

Buy a copy of Farmers Weekly (WH Smith if you're city-based) & have a look at the Vacancies section in there, (or use their website www.fwi.co.uk). Don't read too much into the FW Editorial- it's a bl**dy comic!

Many farmers moan about the inability to get good staff, though they tend to want experience. Maybe you could show willing through hard-graft on menial jobs in return for training up- sort of like an apprenticeship of sorts?

As a Ph'er, I assume that you will have an interest in all things with an engine? In which case, I reckon you might find the arable sector worthwhile- though probably long hours???

Maybe do a course at an Agricultural College locally to you and see which sides of farming appeal the most.

'Farmers Guardian' has a jobs section.

Good luck.

My neighbour is a dairy farmer. He works long hours seven days a week - unless he's just trying to stay out of the house!
