Ah, I'm sorry to hear that.

Out of interest why were you applying for jobs in the first place? Are you not happy where you are?
Is this new job a step up the career ladder or the same job for more money?

I agree with other people that for an extra couple of hundred quid a month its not worth moving for that alone.
However if it is going to springboard you onto further opportunities then it is what matters to you the most.

At the moment i am working as a junior developer and the people i work with are very experience but things are moving very slowly and there is no room for career progression though its a very big company with a small IT setup.

In this new role i will be working as a Senior developer but there will be no one to help or lean on.

it isn't worth doing. although not for the reasons given.

4 interviews before they decide if you are good enough to work for them?!!?

no chance!

also you will suffer a massive culture shock, those southern bds don't like the plain speaking yorkies.

you have to put your ego away, it's not about the money, but the quality of life, you won't get any in Slough.

I made a similar move from Yorkshire to Oxfordshire - working in Bracknell 7 years ago. It's only now that I am feeling settled. Don't do it, it sounds like you have an interview with a small company, you are not going to fit in. It might be ok if it was a large corporate, but then they'd help with removal allowance.

In summary, don't move, wait and find a job that pays 5k more nearer to Leeds.

Rural Yorkshire to Slough. Hell no. There is no finer county than N Yorks in terms of low numbers of people, countryside, low crime, etc.

I could easily double my salary if I moved out of N Yorks, but quality of life is what counts IMO. People come to rural N Yorks on holiday - does anyone ever visit slough if they don't have to? biggrin
North Yorkshire?....God's own country....cloud9

Its a small to medium size company but they are well established. They have paid my interview travel expenses twice worth £350 and the reason for two face to face and two telephone interview was to find the right person for this role.

In my experience more interviews rather than less is more common with private companies.

I think this is the crux and why I moved away from Yorkshire about 13 years ago. As people have already said (and you probably know) it's lovely up north but I found opportunities lacking. Thus it takes longer to get anywhere if your industry isn't in abundance.

However, there are some truly beautiful places in the south and fwiw I prefer it down here anyway. £15k may not make a massive difference right now but if you're looking to improve yourself and push on with your career then you have probably got a better chance doing so in the south.

Since moving back down south the limiting factor on my career progression has been me.

As someone I know would say:

1. What's the difference in terms of notice period? This means if you get made redundant/sacked you get more notice
2. what about sick pay
3. pension
4. holiday pay
5. death in service/income protection/medical insurance
6. loss of employment rights
7. career earnings
8. working hours

there's a lot to think about

I'd stay in Leeds. I understand the figures involved as 15k must be a nice rise if you are getting £200 tax credits but like you say your livings cost increase will easily eat up 15k. And you'll have to live down south. Where the southerners are.

I'd weigh up the pros of possible career prospects with the cons of moving the kids away from family/friends.

I could move to london and earn 15-20k more (I also live near Leeds) But I dont have a stab vest and I dont like jellied eels.

Look at living in High Wycombe too, on the East side. Bit more for your money than Maidenhead.

^^ except working somewhere is not the same as living somewhere.

I worked in Stevenage for four years. The place is a dump but the work's fantastic.

There are plenty of really lovely places to live near Slough that are well within commuting distance. Unfortunately if you have an attitude like that then you'll narrow down your options, which is never a good idea.

Quality of life is important and so where would you and your family prefer to live?

An observation.

It would appear the main beneficiary of a private firm to pay someone an extra 15,000 is the government.

Only the OP can decide (with PH help) if an extra 200 a month is worth it, but why should much of the decision making be be around loss of benefits and effective tax rates of perhaps 75%?

Madness.
