£1500 in advertising in the local papers and online and thought I was going to be spending 12 hours a day CV shortlisting.

I always get caught out as I get loads of agencies phoning up and I am like No way am I wasting my money by giving it to them just for the CV they email over... easy money.

Either I live in a very low unemployment area, my industry in rubbish (Engineering).. advert was crap.. or these millions of unemployed are lazy or too skint to buy a paper! pff

Engineering is a big area.

I've spent the last year looking for staff, and good people are as rare as rocking horse $hit.

BS CVs are ten a penny.

Agree to work with a good agency, let them do the work for you. Yes, it will cost you, but you've just spunked £1500 and got nothing. Do that again and you're close to agency cost anyway.

And you get a guarantee with an agency. We're not all cowboy rip-off merchants you know smile

I'm "resting" at the moment. If the job involves clipping pieces of paper together in a haphazard fashion and putting them in a folder, I'm your man. wink

I have only had one good expereince will agencies, Took a guy on that turned out brilliant.

Our job is for a Quality inspector, would even look into training someone up. I just thought I would be flooded with applicants I know i would if I was sat at home.

We dont advertise the pay because it totally depends on experience, it would start at around £17k for a traniee, semi experienced £25k and up to around £40k for experienced with decent overtime.

I love the quality side of engineering, find in interesting.

That is the problem. Whenever I look at jobs (which is almost never in the local press) the indicated salary tells me what level the job is. I suspect you have a lot of potential trainees who believe it is above their skill level, and a lot of experienced people who think you are looking for a trainee on minimum wage. In the real world, there are a lot of companies out there who are after skilled people on minimum wages, and then are disappointed when the people they get aren't appropriate.

If you go with an agency, go with a small local one who you can talk directly to, not just over the phone. If the recruitment consultant is 23 with a mysterious sniffle and a horrible suit, go elsewhere.

I'm out of work & living in Gloucester which is a 'dead zone' for jobs - been job hunting since last May.

Sadly i dont have a trade or a skill or a profession which hampers somewhat my job search. Just want to get back to work & earn some money!

What kind of engineering is it? and where abouts in Oxfordshire?
Tried to PM but for some reason It's not responding.

I'm probably too far away but will be looking for work after 30th March when I'm made redundant.

Can't find a lot around here at the moment, but I didn't expect to be unemployed for the first time at the age of 45.....

I was out of work for 15 months a little while back now and my experience at "Job Centre Plus" or whatever bulls**t name it is now operating under could provide a few clues as to where the unemployed are.

1. The pub is a good bet. When I had Friday afternoon appointments for my fortnighly 4 minute interview the local unwashed who received their payments in cash (no bank account I assumed) would leave the pub, cross the road to the payment counter, receive their cash and then go back to the pub.

2. Already working somewhere and still claiming. During my period of "signing on" I frequently witnessed vans, trucks etc (usually advertising building or decorating services) pull up outside the Job Centre office. A member of the unwashed would climb out, wander in for their 4 minute appointment, sign on again and then wander back out to the vehichle in question and go back to the cash job they were working on.

In my opinion the system is not robust enough to identify those people who are abusing it and needs to be severely shaken up by Ministers at the earliest opportunity. At one particularly low point during my time signing on I offered to identify those abusing the system (based on what I had witnessed to that point) for a commission on the amount of payments I would save the Government. My offer was politely rejected.
