Wednesday 16th May 2012 quote quote all
Today I have done something that I have never before done at any work place; Gone home because I couldn't deal with another minute doing what I do.

This has left me feeling very confused and empty. Its a job that I enjoy, am good at and with people I am very fond of. I've been there just over 3 years and as an average over that period sit in the top 5 of the company.

My background is sales and the current job is heavily sales / negotiation based. I am 29 now and have been selling in one form or another since I was 18, with a brief stint at University.

I love meeting and finding out about people, I love closing deals and the thrill of the chase. Like most people on PH I am very car orientated although my hands on experience is limited to self taught tinkering.

So far my life has been pretty much taking each day as it comes and doing the best that I can with it, I've managed to buy a house, collect some fun cars and make some great friends.

But what do I do next?

In every aptitude test I've ever taken I have come up as being both a good negotiator and / or manager of people - but I can't get employed to manage people without prior managerial experience!

I also love dogs / dog obedience and anything that involves driving.

Sorry it's all a bit of a ramble, just trying to get my thoughts down as much as anything. Any advice/thoughts/guidance appreciated..

If you love doing your job, what's the issue that caused you to go home today because you can't deal with it any more?

I don't understand.

I deal with people over the phone.

I am expected to deal with 100+ calls per day and very rarely do less. This is in the nature of the job.

My problem is two fold.

Firstly, although I am good at what I do there is no opportunity to progress upwards in my company which is depressing and very de motivating.

Secondly, I am finding it increasingly difficult to accept people treating me in a way that they would not were they face to face. Ending calls abruptly, questioning my knowledge with no decent reason, their tone etc.

Ha! I know, as I said I'm just trying to get my thoughts down and maybe set myself a new direction in life.

I will be back in work first thing tomorrow and will be putting in 110% as per usual.

I left because I lost my cool for the first time on Saturday and could feel myself getting close to snapping again. Rather than let it happen I went home.

Ah - are you cold/warm calling or taking inbound?

Take around 50 inbound a day and the rest is made up of warm-calling and concluding/ constructing deals.

I remember having an argument with, and nearly hitting, a bloke on the London Underground many years ago. Commuting into the City really was not my thing and getting pushed into a carriage by this bloke was the last straw. I went into the office, resigned and never looked back.

You know when it's time to go.

I think that's where I am at now. It's just working out where to go.. Sales will always be sales at the end of the day.

The incident on Saturday was brief, not really the customers fault and something that I'd have moved on from in seconds any other day of the year.

You find yourself in a place many of us have found ourselves in too at some stage in our careers. This is where strong line management has a role, as well as mentorship. Have you broached how you are feeling with your boss? Do you have a mentor at all who you can turn to for advice?

If some independent support would help, drop me a PM at your convenience. Good luck!

Get out of st sales.

I've done call centres and it's ok for a while but as you said, you get a lot of st and don't really go anywhere.

Fortunately sales is a very transferable skill and there's nearly always opportunities for someone who is motivated and able to sell. So get out there and find something that you can use those skills for, that's more interesting and in demand than phone contracts/electricity suppliers or whatever it is your selling now.

I think you know you've probably had enough if you enjoy your job but have to walk out. How about a different slant on sales? What about something like developing new business/clients for existing businesses. Sounds like you have all the skills needed for something like that.

Tyrewrecker - Spot on, good advice.

Rog007 - Appreciate the offer. For the moment I think I'll be okay but will bear you in mind for sure.

AJS - Thank you for your input, fortunately I'm a fair way above selling Electrical/ gas/ windows etc and what I deal in is actually a very specialist market place.
And yes, MTFU certainly helps..

Condor - This seems to be the over-riding opinion of most. Problem is I just don't feel I deserve one till all of my current projects are complete. Then I've promised myself some time for me.

APanda - This may well be the area that I try to head into. The problem is it's such a new direction for me, but I've done similar before so I'm sure I could again!

Eric MC - Well luckily for you it appears you no longer need to work. And luckily for me the 'call centre' I work in really isn't like your average call centre.
