What is the realistic chance of an average TA member getting sent to Afghanistan or similar?
depends on trade

a lot of the Defence Medical services relies on Reservists to provide the expeditionary warfare capability also you find some of the 'reserve' personnel on units like 4626 sqn ( the aeromedical evacuation sqn)spend more time in green / blue than they do in their civvie uniform ...

there are some trades where the reserve element provides unique skills or provides the bulk of the personnel in particular skill

even for fairly standard Combat and Combat Support trades it has taken dedicated tour dodging over the past 10 -12 years not to go at least once ...

however in some SMEs it will be the kiss of death , the kind of SME that doesn;t employ women with functional ovaries etc ...

SMEs who recognise the advantages and can cope with losing people for months at a time should they be mobilised , the public secotr and Organisatiosn who take Corporoate social responsibility and good PR over such things seriously will see it as an asset.

also the more technical your job and your Reserve trade being linked to it the easier it is to sell to an employer.

the other killer at present LGV drivers and it messing up weekly rest as the MoD is no longer exempt ...

A very good friend was in the TA, he loved it and gave it 100%.

He injured himself and was kicked out in short order, leaving him feeling very let down.

All the comradeship bullst etc. seemed to count for nothing, they had no more use for him so without ceremony, out he went.
It's changed now so the treatment you receive is the same as the regulars.

I've managed to injure myself with them since then, and their treatment from the point of injury onwards has been nothing short of fantastic.

Pleased to hear things have changed for the better.

I was shocked by the experiences of a number of ex-regular forces work colleagues, especially when compared to the way military personnel are looked after in the USA.

Same treatment as the regulars? So they patch you up with the bare min of treatment then kick you out with no support net work? Wonderful! The regular army doesn't even forward your medical file to your GP!

So things have not changed after all then!

Slightly off topic, it is said that at Dunkirk infantrymen were ordered to break the golden rule "never lose your rifle" by throwing them in the sea as there was no room for them on the little boats.

I have heard that once back in England the survivors had the cost of the missing weapons taken from their pay, some were even put on a charge for losing army property.

You do get the odd one who will join after there service. A lot of current TA regt will post in people who are close to there full term this go 2 ways either they will strive to help the newer generation with there training or skills or they will be on a one man mission and not give a flying fk.

You also get EX military who will work in the Regiments as FTRS these will bring a wealth of knowledge.

then you get regular postings to Run Miltary stores, MT, commanding officer drivers etc so there can be a really good mixture of people who are regulars at a current TA regt.

My Last posting had the EX Army Air core RSM as the PSAO

Bit of an old topic, but have you a update, or can anybody contribute anything to this thread. I left the regulars about 6-7 years ago I'm half thinking about it, but I'm a little bit more "relaxed" around authority now, and don't know if I'd be able to take the thing seriously.
I don't think I could go back in even with the TA, been out 10 years now and I don't think I could handle some 21 year old l/cpl giving me st.....same as you I don't think I'd take it too seriously now and wouldn't last long!

I started off with the local TA unit for a year or so before going in the regs, looks like its completely different now to when I was in 19 years ago though! 19 years!!!! Jesus I feel very old typing this!

I know a couple guys who went TA and reservist when they got out, most rejoined after a few years and they're deployed pretty often now, they're on more ops now than when they were in!

What were you in before? There's always the PSD stuff in afghan or out in the boats shooting pirates if you want to work with military guys again. Markets swamped now though with everyone jumping on the band wagon so its harder to get into unless you know someone. The boats pay very well though but you need a few extra courses & quals to get even a look in.
