Basic mechanical knowledge because if you are successful as a driver then you will know the inside and out of the traction you'll be driving.

I used to play the MB game 'Simon Says' to improve my reaction for the computer test, you could play the computer games but I think it's luck on the day.

A lot boils down to common sense I think, get ya head screwed on and don't panic on the day, step back if you need to and compose yourself because you might only get one chance.

The whole job revolves around safety, think safety all the time.

Sounds like a great job to get into, one of those jobs you think you will become as a child, but never really think more then that. Nice to see there is the job opening for this job.

Just wish it was alot further south

Aren't these guys being paid more than some airline pilots!?
Difference being that a pilot can progress his career and earnings by training on different types of aircraft. Someone can earn modest wages at the begining of his career flying small jets and end up being an instructor pilot on a A380 earning mega money.

A train drivers salary is pretty static no matter what train company you work for and what experience you have.(to within a few grand and inflationary rises excepted).

So what's the job like day in day out? Is it monotonous running the same route everyday or is there always something new to keep your interest up. Is a desire just to get the bloody hell out of corporate office hell enough? wink

Cheers,
Rob

I know someone who's going for the interview and tests to train to be a driver, was talking about the tests they make you do and some are quite odd but also very hard. Some seem to be what you'd expect like tests to gauge your maths and mechanical ability at a most basic level but others specifically testing observation and concentration skills that are very hard.

On that freight application it talks of driver and driver operator with driver being the better pay grade.

What are the differences in the roles?

Like being in your very own real life Hornby! Any jobs in steam? Do you get more for shovelling coal and a mucky face? biggrin

Just out of interest, where was that position for as it now appears unavailable? The only other one is in Scotland.

It was for the Trans-Pennine Express with locations in Manchester, York and Blackpool. I'm in S.London but have applied just to see if I get asked to come in for an assessment.

Been in my current business for 20 odd years and I don't really enjoy it anymore and I can't see it sustaining me in interest and finances for another 15 years of my working life so would like a change.

Therefore if asked I would consider relocating.

There is another link for freight driver based in Acton in this thread but strangely the money is not as good, especially considering the cost of living around here. Going to try for that as well though.

Good luck, I'll be interested to see how you get on. I must admit to experiencing similar feelings regarding television, although my hands are tied to some extent for a few years yet.

Hope you get it.

Cheers Slo Mo. although I would shat a brick if I did as it would mean a major life upheaval biggrin but I do need a kick up the ass.

ETA a vision mixer I know has a mate who was a freelance sound engineer for Goldfrapp. He gave it all up and became a train driver and according to her he is a happier bloke with more money these days.

Anyone read the trainee driver blog I refered to earlier. Very interesting. Got to three quarters of the way through and a year has passed and he has finally gone solo.

Fifth trip out and he has a suicide yikes

Off driving for a month with conselling etc. According to him it's unfortunately common in his area around that time. 2006 is the year.

does anyone have any info regarding colour vision.
years ago at school i done those colour tests with the dots and you have to find the numbers. i didnt do to well. i found some tests online and once again didnt do so well, not quite sure what colour defection i may be suffering from.

but it looks as this career is stopped at the beginning as well as the astronaught/fighter pilot/arist dreams. i recall colouring the australia flag purple in primary school and being particularly proud of it only for the teacher to shout me down and telling me to do it again in the right colour, and despite picking another pencil it still ended up purple (apparantly), i met the teacher a few years ago and i still argued it was blue.
