Trainee train drivers wanted...

Don't over prepare for the interview/assessments-familiarise yourself with how the assessments will be conducted and their content, but don't try and be too clever. Someone I know spunked a couple of hundred quid on various books, courses etc and got nowhere. The practise material they send you will be more than enough.
Had to take my first day sick in over two years yesterday. Got halfway through my job to my break, I was feeling pretty rough driving the last bit before I got relieved but when I started chucking up and paying frequent toilet visits it was time to throw in the towel. Control fortunately were excellent with me about it-it meant cancelling a train but they quite rightly said they'd rather do that than have an incident on their hands. Still felt guilty though!

Like what has already been said earlier, be prepared & don't waste money buying the online material. Rail chat & rail forums have lots of very knowledgable people & there are multiple threads about the subject.
I would make sure your well read on what your wrote on your application paperwork as they will question you on your answers, also read up on the company online such as what routes that depot goes over & stations .
Always reiterate you are willing to learn as its a 12 month course & the companies want trainable staff as it costs close to £100k to train up a driver !
Good luck with it & just be yourself

Thanks for your replies.
I won't buy any books or online material for sure. Mainly I suppose because I would only like to do the job if im suitable, I don't want to learn how to do the tests by repetition, but will do some research in to what the tests entail and what to expect.
Good tip about the application form, I'll get that printed off and read through so I know exactly what I said!
It's quite a daunting prospect for me as the last time I had a test was probably when I was doing my GCSE's about 7 or 8 years ago, but should I pass the interview and go on to the assesments I'm sure it will be a good experience anyway. I do feel like my brain is stagnating in my current job as I haven't had to learn or apply myself in quite some time so a new challenge would be greatly received, I just hope my brain still works as it should and hasnt completely turned to mush!
I'll see how it goes anyway and update the thread after the initial interview

Had a stab at it. Got in before it closed. Missed a couple of the letter based time based check questions but think I got most right. If its a 100% pass then I'm out!https://uk.firstgroupcareers.com/vacancy/trainee-t...

Application took a while though, wrote war and peace to include all the points I wanted to cover.
Looks like telephone interviews have been offered today, I didn't get one. Disappointed, but it was a bit of a last minute thing. I spent hours putting the application together but I did it in one morning as the position closed that afternoon. I prefer to think examples through as I have many !
Just seen this ends in 2 days time
Closing Date
13/11/2015

Just thought I'd drop in on this thread.
Weeks ago I applied to London midland for a trainee job, and to my surprise I had an email today saying I've got an interview.
I've heard how hard the interview process is for these jobs... I'm very keen on this as a career change - I've booked my HGV license as I didn't even think I'd be considered for the trainee train drivers job given my background is in Motorsport engineering, but I'm very pleased to have an interview nonetheless and can't wait to see how far i can get.
I'm going to be preparing as much as possible for the interview so any helpful links or info would be greatly appreciated if anyone has been through this process.
Cheers

Strange, I was going to post on this thread today! I received an email on 5th of October saying that I have been shortlisted for an interview - and they haven't set any interview slots yet and will be in touch in due course.
Starting to get a bit concerned now as I haven't heard anything - but then it was back in August when I originally applied so it does seem they do take their time with the process.

What most TOC's do is set up a few days of interviews, start off in groups of 20 - 30 and get whittled down during the day. When I had an interview there was only 2 of us left at the end of the day.I received an email on 5th of October saying that I have been shortlisted for an interview - and they haven't set any interview slots yet and will be in touch in due course.

Why not chase them up?

I've emailed to chase but haven't had time to call as yet. Why not chase them up?
Still looking in to it all properly to make sure it's the right move...

I came from the motor industry, had the same thoughts as you.Been on the job for 16 years now, best move I ever made, wish I'd done it years ago.
On the passenger side there are rarely redundancies, a decent wage, full sick pay abd a pension to look forward to.£73 a week) and no pension.
