With Arriva now runnuing the Northern franchise , keep an eye on their recruitment. One commitment in the franchise deal was was a promise of 2000 trains a day, for that to happen they need 450 new drivers over the next 5 years. I understand 80 to be recruited this year.

I've been working for a rail company for 9 years now but the other day finally got to have a proper look round a loco, looked round a 66 and a euro 66.

Made me wonder how often FOC's recruit drivers for things like Class 66.

Bit of a thread resurrection, but I’ve just had an email from East Midland trains to say that I have been shortlisted for a trainee driver position, and that the next steps include some tests and assessments.

Does anyone have any experiences they could share about what to expect from the tests etc?

Thanks biggrin

They'll send you a practise pack-use it. Don't bother buying various self help books-it'll be a waste.

Say this often but you should have a gander at this forum,

https://www.railforums.co.uk/forums/railway-jobs-c...

All you need to know is on here and the search function actually works!

Good luck!

Thank you. I’m very fed up in my current line of work, I don’t want to pin all my hopes on this as I’m aware of how competitive the spaces are, and that there are tests to pass, but it really would be fantastic to get the job.

Perfect, hopefully I’ll receive this once I’ve got confirmation of a date for the stage 1 tests.

I’ve applied internally in my TOC.
Fingers crossed smile

Applied a couple of years ago but didn’t go through to the next stage.

Good luck with the applications, just bear in mind it's a very competitive place applying for a job as a train driver & bear in mind it's usually a long drawn out process.
So being patient is essential & read up as much you can on the railforums plus research the TOC, the HR dept like you being proactive

I passed the telephone application but then cancelled the assessment day as I realised that if I was to go any further, I would have had to move house to get there
