Morning all,

I've been quite lucky and had quite a lot of job offers since being made redundant last week.

One thing I don't have is a nice blazer to go in to interviews with. I'm a big believer that first impressions count, and that's on a physical superficial level as well as an intellectual one.

I've had a look in TopMan but as you can imagine they aren't the best feel, look alright though!

What do you have for your interview attire?

I don't know how widespread Slaters are, but if you have one near you try it. I visited loads of suit shops recently in Cardiff, all priced 200-500 and everything was pretty much the same but I couldn't decide.

I tried Slaters as a last port of call, they had the biggest selection. I chose a suit, to be honest I didn't look at the price as I assumed as its all the same spread of designers I'd be paying £300-£400.

Got to till, £79. For a suit and trousers. Adjusted and delivered to my house. I couldn't believe it, I questioned it but it was correct!

I'm not sure you should be going to an interview in a blazer, unless the interview is for a geography teacher wink

I bought a reasonable suit last week from Debenhams, after trawling around John Lewis, M&S and somewhere else (forget where). They're all very similar, it's simply down to getting a cut that fits you nicely, and a material that you like and that has sufficient gravitas for a formal occasion (so probably not the bright blue, orange or purple offerings that I saw).

Most of the above places do an adequate range of suits with the nice little details that I like, such as hand stitched/finished trims, etc. I got a 'tailored fit', as it's a slimmer fit than most, which seem to be cut to fit the spreading gut of the middle aged smile

Another vote for Slaters - although I can't vouch for their £79 suit.

They also give free alterations for the life of the suit too.

Free delivery? That's not something all Slaters stores offer I don't think - the Nottingham branch certainly doesn't.

Just pop into M&S, their suits are easily good enough for 99% of offices.

I am lucky to have a Jaeger outlet near me. The suits from there I find are very comfortable and not being the tallest person around they tend to have some good prices on stuff that fits me!

So long as the job isn't likely to be a place full of suit and shirt snobs (You know the sort that refuse to look at you unless your shirts are double cuffed and pocket less) then M&S or even Next will do you proud.

If you are not having to be very careful moneywise and can afford to spend a little on yourself I would go to a good local independent gentleman's outfitters and have a look in there. I don't ware a suit every day as I don't like suit jackets much. That said I treat myself to a new suit every so often and usually end up spending about £500. you really do notice the difference between a Boss suit and an M&S one when side by side.

Get a suit not a blazer unless you are working in a golf club.

I like Jaeger, well cut for my frame but M&S are always a good bet.

Investing (and I judge it to be a true investment in yourself) in a bespoke dark wool suit with two pairs of trousers should be a staple of every man's career development. It will fit better, will improve your confidence, make you look smarter and will outlast a poorly purchased alternative. Don't scrimp on the threads. Good luck!

The last suit I bought was a Jasper Conran from Debenhams and it seems to be lasting very well compared to others I have had. If you can wait until Debenhams have a sale on, you can usually get quite a good deal.

It's 60% wool and 40% polyester. I find a blend gives the best compromise between looks, feel, durability and crease resistance.
