Hi,

I have an interview for a parts advisor position next week.

Just to make sure, it would be helpful if I could get some ideas on questions to ask and prepare for?

all the best,

m

Hi this is my field, I started as a parts advisor, parts manager, aftersales manger, regional manager, operations director then working for a manufacture.

I would ask questions along the lines of do they have a trade parts operation? what DMS do you use? what training opportunities are there with the manufacture, what sort of KPI`s does the manufcature measure and what areas do we need to improve on. Will I be involved in helping hit parts sales and purchase targets.

On the whole when recruiting a parts advisor I am looking for somebody who is confident without being cocky, can deal with people who listens well and can uderstand what part they are explaining without them being able to see it. Good computer skills, although training will be given on the DMS and parts identification software but it is a big help if you have good keyboard skills, word, Excel and Outlook. Good telephone manner, A good knowledge of the basics of what part goes where ie would you know that a flywheel is on the end of the crank? Show you are prepared to learn, product knowledge is key, so model range, what year for model changes etc. The job has got very systen based now but the best guys are the ones who know what they are looking for without to much fuss. I would always suggest reading all of the product info features, benefits etc ( I did and do still do this in my own time)

The Parts Advisor job is often one of two types the first a guy who supplys parts when asked probably more of a storeman and then a parts sales advisor who would ask the extra questions like do you need the gaskets or other associated parts when selling a component. The long term effect of which type you are will dictate your future pay and a good parts person can earn very good money.

Try to be supportive of the customer, he has a problem and you have the ability and tools to provide a solution (dont forget the workshop is just as much a customers as the guy on the phone or the counter

What franchise is it?
