I've been away so only just picked this up.

If you're set on being a contractor QS I wouldn't worry too much about RICS at the moment. There's a strange obsession with accreditation but in reality until you reach a certain level professionally I think the fees are a waste of time.

In 12/13 years of being a QS I've yet to be hindered by a lack of RICS accreditation although I can see the benefits would probably be advantageous in the next few years (i'm now 30). Likewise with many seniors I have worked with in the past.

I've worked in Manchester, Dubai and London and never once been to an interview where it was non-negotiable. I'm a fee earner now so for me to enhance my rate RICS would help but I'm doing pretty well without it.

Bottom line - experience counts over academic qualifications. The alternative route if you can wait is to get MCIOB then go in for the experienced professional route. Alternatively the CEM in Reading do some conversion courses.

Have you thought about a day release BSC? That's how most people do these. I'd get on to some agencies in London to see if they can help. You should be able to pick up a job easily enough with the experience you already have - even if it means moving to a smaller sub-contractor.

Check the websites of the big contractors too as you may be able to get in as an assistant?

If you have some decent PM/QS experience, the company I work for would certainly take on someone at grad/assistant level with a none surveying degree. We have a number or very experienced PMs that have started that way. If your interested in working consultant PM side in London let me know

I just thought I would update this thread as its nearly a year on. I actually didn't take up the MSc I put my place on hold for a year. I had to stay working in a similar role as before, due to personal circumstances I actually couldn't take a pay cut hence just kept working to make ends meet. However throughout the year have kept a eye out and applied to jobs training/graduate schemes which start in September but I have not had any luck.

But I am still dead set on getting into to quantity surveying, i should assume having another year of experience will not do me any harm.

If anyone has any advise or any opportunities it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Good luck mate, as someone currently looking to get a foot hold in the industry I think you'll get along fine. Experience counts for alot.

I had an ask around earlier. We're not recruiting any trainees currently due to high intake.
What was Nick's surname?

I know we are recruiting for assistant QS' so may be worth applying that way and see what happens?
Business growing well currently so a good place to be. I love it.

Thank you so much for asking, I wouldn't mind applying for a assistant role however I believe not having a quantity surveying degree would hinder my chances.

The surname was Wilner according to his email address but not sure, would be great getting a job at wilmott dixon.

Thanks for you help could you give me a heads up if anything does come up, that would be great.

Anyone else out there help me out?
