Thanks Megaphone, my mate has the "green card" that everyone seems to have. The rules were changed in July so nobody seems to know what is what, I will ring the test centre first thing tomorrow and sort it out. The visitors card I know nothing about, is it a new thing or could they have stopped issuing those now as well?

Next problem is they need either a current passport or a photo driving licence, neither of which I have, my passport has expired and my driving licence is the ancient pink and green type.

I have had the same address for 24 years and saw no point in updating it, until now anyway. The passport I never bothered with as I had no plans to go abroad and there was all that kerfuffle about backlogs this summer.

We'll see what they say tomorrow, could be interesting.

Hopefully they won't notice your passport is out of date, when I went they only gave it a quick look, it's to prove the person taking the test is not someone else. I doubt the test centre will be much help re the card, they just do the testing and all the results are electronically stored, you then apply for a card afterwards using the pass number. I found the CSCS people really helpful when I called them, that's why I went for the white 'construction related occupation' card as it was a better option that the now defunct green card.

Good luck with the test!

After a lot of faffing about I finally sat the test this morning. I had to have a mate who is a director sign a form to validate my identity, rather like when you apply for a passport.

Not really knowing which test I was taking and what I needed to know, I did a bit of online research and polished up my fire safety, warning signs and COSHH knowledge.

I need not have worried as the test was pretty basic, you have 45 mins to complete the 50 multiple choice questions, it took me twenty mins and I scored 49/50, not bad for someone who has never set foot on a construction site.

I will of course be obliged to report anything not being done "by the book" to a supervisor immediately smile

You'll find yourself looking at the colours of fire extinguishers and measuring the rail heights on scaffolds.

Hilariously easy. Never tired of reminding the best cost manager I've known that he failed it twice.

I'm an academic and even I passed it with no wrong answers! It took ten whole minutes.

Two colleagues are scared to take theirs for fear of failing. I should point them to this thread...
