Evening PH.

I work for a large super market doing their home delivery service. I've been at the company for seven years, this department for two years.

Our store is currently having some cosmetic changes done, as such, two of our vans, along with two post code areas have gone up to another store. Approx two miles up the road.

A couple of drivers a day are being told to go to this other store. I was under the impression that we would be swapped around, not the same people each time. However it is always the same people.

One thing I was thinking though is, this store get paid a higher hourly rate than we do. So, should we be getting the same while up there? Ignore the fact we should be getting the same anyway.

For me it would be an extra £40 a month or so.

You would need to refer to your contract. I imagine there would be specific clauses regards place of work. There also may be about reducing your hours in quieter times etc.

any questions raise with line manager then HR.

I'd imagine you have a 'place of work' and it would be this that your hourly rate is reflected by. If these drivers report to the same place as you but are then asked to go to another store they should be getting the same rate you are.

I apologise for being this guy, but is an extra £40 a month really worth causing a fuss over?

I equally apologise for being the guy that would feel shortchanged that the person doing the EXACT same job in a a different branch of the same retailer - gets £40 extra a month.

Problem of course is that the employers solution to this - would be to dock £40 from the guy at the other branch frown

Take it as an opportunity Kier - there may be some different women at this branch.

40 a month, 10 a week...thats a couple of pints at the pub.

Definitely worth causing a fuss over.

If I remember correctly my Tesco contract stated I may be required to work from a different store/location when required. (Within an hours travel)
I would then claim milage for this extra distance, plus a few extra as nobody ever worked it out smile

Can't see them paying you extra per hour.

You get paid whats in your contract.

I've worked in places where 2 people doing the same job at the same place get paid different rates, sometimes this has been 1000's per year difference. One place in particular paid whatever they could get away with at the time, so you might have someone on a low rate that had been there years (and was good at their job), but a new starter with little experience would be on more!

fk off. It was a simple typo, don't get your fking nickers in a twist.

To everyone else, thank you smile.

I know £40 isn't a huge amount, but when you are in a job you hate, and someone is doing exactly the same job but getting paid more, it's a bit annoying.

Ps. I know I missed the 'K' wink.

The potential and "justifiable" reasons are:

They are all better than you at the job and this can be defined (performance management processes)
They have better skills & experience that lead to the above point.
You have different contractual T&C's so the difference in base pay is not comparable on it's own. I.E. different pension schemes/allowances etc....

Outside of this they are on shakey ground and it could prove to be discriminatory, if it's a big chain then I would imagine it is more than likely some different or historic T&C's and they would have covered everything else.

I would say that they are within their and your contractural rights to ask you to cover another location without changing your pay. If it were to be come a permanent move then the case would be handled differently and I would expect a change in pay would occur.
