Ok guys, im 3 months in to a new job and just been offered a full contract with a small rise, but without sounding ungrateful, it aint enough for our current financial situation, i love the job as its exactly what i have been doing for the last ten plus years before being made redundant, so rather than leave and find something else altogether i want to learn a trade and be able to do this as a part time enterprise to earn some extra income

My problem is im not sure what to train in, i am quite handy with tools and enjoy a bit of diy here and there so was thinking of something along those lines.

Anyone willing to give some input on best routes trades and places to start would be great

A bit tricky, as I might say "Metal work" and you say, "I hate metalwork!"

Can you suggest 3-5 general areas of interest and the community could offer advice on how to get into those areas?

DIY / Talking to people / Technology / Engineering / Cooking / Management / Etc!

What do you do now?

I suppose the alternative is to see how you can make savings in your current expenditure. £50 phone contracts? Full Sky package? Premium gym membership? Car with high running costs?

Alternatively, what hands-on jobs could go well with your current job (surveyor)? You could use that to expand what you can offer to private individuals.

Fair point, im currently in the insurance repair sector for a network approved building contractor, surveying, estimating and reporting then project managing the job from start to finish. I was thinking of something along the lines of ceramic tiling as i've done this successfully at home on a number of projects. I also thought about man with a van or even window cleaning.
we dont have an extravagant life style by any stretch, hence the reason for some extra income for some little treats here and there.
I want to be able to send my eldest son to Kumon school once a week and this will cost in the region of 50 quid a month so an extra 200 a month is my target.

I'd definitely learn something like electrical work or carpentry then because you can then do the project management as well as getting on with the physical work since you're so inclined. I know someone who does this during the week and at weekends. Makes about £200 a day.

If you are going to start doing work for others some trades (e.g. electrics) will need certification. Also consider if you need public liability insurance.

I appreciate the need for money in the short term, but could you study to move your career on, quantity surveyor qualifications maybe ?

Or could you look for a job as a construction project manager ?
