Actually OP sounds like a pain in the ass contractor.

When I initially read this topic I thought yeah, the employer sounds a bit of a racist, then it progressed and I thought hang on, it's entirely possible that he didn't say anything racist, office chinese whispers et al, and then it gets to the bottom of page 2 and now the only racist/troublemaker appears to be the OP who is now gloating about getting one over someone.

It's a bit like that saying that is usually used as a race card, is it because I'm black? Why the hell does it have to be anything to do with racism ffs. Maybe he just doesn't like you? It's entirely within his rights to not like someone.

Then came the gloating and perhaps we've now got a better understanding of exactly why he doesn't like you.

Get another contract and move on, if you haven't already.

Nothing written down, just hear-say.

The line manager is a coward. I sent an email confirming the last day in which I took down the PM and Line manager. Copied Big Boss.

Did the reply? Did they F
They cant even look at my face. I own them. They tried to screw me for there own benefit and what happened?

Suspect they can't look you in the face because they will burst out laughing at you rather than through any fear of you "owning" them.

Why do so many I.T. people have this God complex? I'm genuinely interested in how you 'moved the company on'?!

With respect, you're a contractor. Move on to the next gig. Forget about them.

Other than the money i thought the whole point in being a contractor was not having to get involved with office politics, so what does it all matter?

Definately.

I'm a contractor and my current contract runs up to christmas, and there was talk of one more extension. Either way thats a good point to be looking for a new role.

Now our boss wants us to put in a really big effort and complete the project by the end of November. This will mean working more 7 day 70+ hour weeks. I'm on a day rate so I'll only get paid for 56 max. All that effort will mean I'll be out of work a month earlier, and am very likely to have no work until the new year.

Am I bitter about it? No, its contracting. I can be dropped with zero days notice thats why I get paid more than a permie.

If extra work is needed then through goodwill I'd maybe put in a couple of extra hours (per day) effort. Any more than that and the answer is no, but I'd work billable days at the weekend instead.

7 * 8hrs per day = 56, so that sounds like what hes doing. 2 extra hours per day = 14 hrs, which is in line with your 2 extra hours a day effort, and totals 70hrs.

I always cringe slightly when I see contractors whinging or participating in office politics.. Even the notion of a notice period for contract termination is bizarre when any agency contract these days is drafted to avoid mutuality of obligation - legally either party could just refuse to offer / accept any further work.

Correct, except the majority of the extra hours are done at the weekends so we're pulling long shifts (covering 24hr days) with overlaps on the shifts. That means I can be working 8 hours on monday for 8 hours pay, but 14 hours over night on a Sunday for the same 8 hours pay.

The result of this extra effort will see my contract terminated early, and I will lose over a months billable days.

A pain yes, but its what I signed up for. If I wanted certainty then I should be a permie.

Unfortunately these things happen, and you just have to move on in the best possible way - not ideal I know. I was on a contract several years ago, and there was a 'personality clash' for want of a better phrase.... my supervisor was a staunch football fan (I am not a football fan/player or anything in any way football, just not my thing) he picked up on this (I was just neutral) and was to put it mildly a bd. When it came to my departure, another dept in the same building were interested in me, but he wouldn't give a reference. They interviewed me though, and broached the subject asking why do you think *** wouldn't give you a reference. I just said 'I think he has personality issues - it made him feel better I guess' and I got the job. Seems he made a habit of acting like this, and was known for it, and any 'victim' was seen as that - shame is that nobody would do anything about it.

Is that genuinely your attitude? 63% of the world's population dismissed in one sweeping statement.
