I have a paper copy of a recent appraisal recently with my manager and then my managing director, in writing they have both written that I am extremely talented and a valuable asset to the company, etc…

As I am looking for a new job, I was wondering it there would ever be the opportunity in which I could use this appraisal to my benefit? I suppose, kind of like a reference?

Now the obvious answer is no because it’s an internal document and showing it to anyone would show a lack of integrity, however if asked if my current employer is happy with me what is to stop me simply reciting it from memory?

Strange question maybe, but points of view appreciated.

No because each company has its own language when it comes to appraisals and what means one thing in one won't mean the same in another.

Also, as you say, it is a private internal document...

The appraisal is yours. You can show it to whomever you wish unless company policy states the contrary, which would be very unusual in my experience.

The opportunity to introduce the actual appraisal itself into a job application is however also unusual. You could quote from it in your CV or a job application which is the most you could do I suspect. That may spark a request to see it; but of course, most prospective employers should acknowledge that past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Good luck!

I'd be surprised if a prospective employer would be interested in seeing it. However one person I interviewed brought a testimonial/reference from her commanding officer in Afghanistan. She was in the TA and sent out there for a number of months service. It was truly impressive document. We hired her.
