Unlucky, sorry to hear it didn't have the ending you wanted.

Hopefully however you are still in a good place with them, and will have more opportunities in the future.

Why let you get as far as the interview stage then if he already knew this to be the case?

I don't understand that at all.
I don't either. I do have that thought that this was a bit of lip service. Something given to me for what I did rather than merited.

It just feels a little bit like taking a punch on the chin rather than a pat on the back. He's said that he's going to give a serious thought to the candidate before offering him the job on Monday. So even though I've been ruled out no one is definite either. All that is definite is that I won't be getting it.

So.... the next question is.... how and when are they providing the training? - so that when the opportunity does come round.......
From the sounds of it its working with this new manager and learning from him

Sounds like time to update the CV - learn some additional skills in the next few months - and exit stage left.

What made it worse was that he said if it was a smaller store or a quieter store he could overlook the fact I didn't have the required skill set, but with this being a grade A store he wanted to get an experienced person.

rather disappointed in it all.

In a postive spin, you put yourself forward, you have integrity, so apply for every smaller store manager job that comes up. They will admire you for bouncing back - get a years experience and then go for a bigger store.

Yeah. i mean its happened where managers have come in - two weeks and they've left.

At least I have a job. I just hope the new manager is friendly.

Look at it this way - compared to a few months ago - you have the ear of the CEO, you have good interview experience and you know what is expected to become manager of an A grade store.

So ask the CEO to recommend a mentor from his team to help you get to the next level.

Exactly this.

There's no substitute for experience and the interview process has been exactly that.

Haven't you been running the store for the last few months anyway? Surely that would be an indicator of whether you are capable based upon the performance.

Yeah with the training i've received and the fact i've had two people's role to fulfill - mine and the managers - i've ran the shop - I doubt there were many area's which could've been improved over the christmas period.

Daft question but did you point that out to them?

ETA: If not then why not give them a call and say that since your interview you have been thinking and mention the above. Then suggest that if they are not sure why don't they give you a 3 month trial and see how things run\\\\\\\/

Is the business a chain retailer?

If so, maybe, request a manager position in a smaller store to get your foot in the door.

Not getting the promotion is always tough however one of the worst things that can happen is that you got the role, don't have the skills and end up in the horrible situation of being in job that you can't do. In retail it happens far too often and people are promoted due to circumstance rather than readiness and/or merit.

Keep the faith and try and absorb as much as you can from your new manager.
