I fking hate Hull and don't know why they still live there.
Whats wrong with it exactly?

Im no Hull-ite but lived on the outskirts in East Yorkshire. Perfectly nice where I was. Hull was like any other town in the country IMO with its share of good and st.
Lost count the number of times my car got scratched from vandals whilst at college or at the supermarket in Bilton area.

Used to go out in the centre and there was always a fight in which ever pub we went to (these were the upmarket ones) and don't particularly like being threatened with knives, watching someone trying to beat friends up (for a laugh), etc, etc.

That was in the 90s and its got no better.

Last time I went out there, we were in a group of 4 and 2 of us were lagging 30m or so behind, 2 people pushed past us and saw our friends and last thing we heard was 'they will do', they confronted them and tried to mug them, same 2 people ended up in hospital as they may or may not have fallen into a metal shutter of a shop and got hurt.

Its a crap place and hate it.

Yeah who am I kidding.

I had a blue Clio GT when I was 19 which was lowered on coilovers, saved my ass off for it working in retail part time. Got spat on multiple times, kicked multiple times, keyed. Got verbal abuse from people being called a 'stuck up wker' etc while driving it. Only a £12k clio ffs.

Never had any of those problems in Surrey with a 3er sport plus in black/red which I had parked near park barn in Guildford for a while. I thought that was a nice car and wouldn't have dared even drive it around Hull

I don't think the town is too bad, certainly improved over the last decade physically, theres some really st areas like the student houses around Hull uni (Newland ave) and Orchard park, Bransholme etc. Absolute fking st holes. But West Ella, Swanland are nice enough, maybe Kirk Ella. If they can be classed as Hull........ People living there are generally ex southern people or people who have actually worked in life. Residents are known to the Hullites as yuppies.

The people are the problem. Northern disgusting scummy low life under achieving peasants come to mind. So bitter. I would never move back up north, especially to Hull. No jobs and teaming with horrible horrible people.

Agree with the violence. Never got in a fight around town thank god but there was always East Hull vs. West Hull fights especially when waiting for a taxi home at 3am. Managed to blag my way out of getting my head kicked in a few times as I didn't want to lose my place in the queue.

Sutton was as close to bransholme and orchard park as I went, even then it might have been with a hockey stick/baseball bat in the car, the feckless would step out in front of my car and try to do a stage coach style robbery, they got the message when I got out and belted them with whatever bat I had in the car. I daren't hit them with the car as my folks would have gone mental at me.

Swanland, etc... if you talk to folks there, they never say they are from Hull as they look down on the place, same with Cottingham.

Last time I went there to visit my folks, a homeless person was asking for change at the train station, I recognised him instantly as one of the major bullies at my old school (Withernsea), he had fallen on such hard times that he resorted to begging in an area where people have no spare change.

Sooner my folks move away from that area the more times I will visit, I hate the train journey there, because as soon as you hit doncaster or brough, it becomes a free for all lets get pissed train, in that short hour you have to watch out for your belongings and step over so many beer cans, etc... its not nice.

You sound pretty bitter - and to cover the whole of the North is a bit of a broad brush.

wink

I moved from Devon to Jersey, stayed there 5mths then was supposed to be moving to Malvern in Worcs. Cancelled that & moved to Eastbourne instead, stayed there for 2yrs then realised I missed Devon & came home.

I was young, free & single when I left - I returned with my now long term partner. Not especially close to my family & my mates were scattered around in the forces etc anyway.

Not sure I'd be so keen to up & go again with family in tow.

Little update:

The interview went well, me and the misses spent a couple of days up there preparing and looking at local houses to get a feel for what we liked. Found some beautiful places that ticked all the boxes which was good. The misses was very positive whilst we were up there and sounded dead set on going for it if we got the chance, but since coming back has now taken a u-turn and is worried about leaving family smile Talking to her it seems she changes her mind every 5 minutes hehe

Bad notes were that the job is not shift work so it will most likely be a pretty serious pay cut if i do get it, and it will be 3-4 weeks before they will let me know if I have got the job or not. Also the site is a bit less 'cutting edge' from where I am working at the moment which was a bit disappointing.

So lots to think about. We are going to each do our own list of pro's and cons and then discuss afterwards, but I don't want to think too hard about it and risk being disappointed if i don't get offered the job. I am erring towards going for it as i would rather regret doing something than not. She is torn between really wanting to live there but not wanting to leave family :/

If you value her at all, turn it down and find something else. The family thing is a pull stronger than you, and it could end up with you each going your separate ways. If that's a possibility for you, then maybe time for you to have a think about what you want to do and how to live life in the Lakes as a single man.

The 'we can just nip down every weekend' will stop you settling in an area, and it'll appear to her that it's just temporary while you do this job, then you're moving back again.

The trick is to tactfully convince her that (a) in your mid-twenties the umbilical cord back to the womb is, by now, very stretchy and (b) it's not a move to the bloody moon. I'll emphasise tactfully again laugh

hehe just to confirm its not like we live in our families pockets at the moment. Her mum is 100 miles away and other family about 40 miles away, and we normally only get to see them every month or so. She is just nervous as we won't be able to just pop down and see them if we need to. She is pretty independant

She really isn't, if that is the constraint.
